Photo by Mark Reesor, Whitby Free Pres Undera15s bounnced ntouirniamntsemi finals Over the pat weekend, the Whitby rep elito under-15 boys' soccer teain, sponsored by t he Oshawa Midtown Mail and Dominion Knitting, made it to othe seri-final round of the Whitby rep tournament. In divisional group play, Whitby finished with three wins in as many gaines. In gaine one, Whitby Wolves defeated Kingston Township 8-3. Whitby started off sluggishly as the opening minutes had the score deadlocked at 2-2. Scott McDavid opened the scoring with an accurate shot taken outside the penalty area for a quick 1-0 lead. Kingston capitalized to notch the score at 1-1. Jason Schleiffer converted on a header from an accurate chip by Kevin da Silva for a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half Whitby went to work and pressured the Kingston defence scoring five goals on markers by Collins (two), McDavid, Schleiffer and Ryan Smith for a convincing 8-3 firat gaine victory. In gaine two, Whiftby recorded a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Ottawa team. At haîf-time the score was scoreless. In the second half Herman Johnson sunk a long shot for 1-0 lead. Schleiffer completed the scoring to ensure the Whitby win. Nick Wood recorded the shutout with strong support froin fullbacks Tim Grieder, Ros HamilI, Donavan Bond, Dillon Osbourne and Jason Brown. In gaine three Wolves played a crossover gaine againat Nepean. In a close gaine, Wolves won 3-2. Hamili and Johnson scored on excellent soccer chip shots over 3 for Shannon On Aug. 16, the Whitby under-13 select soccer teain defeated Port Hope 3-1. Paul Shannon scored all three goals fur Whitby. the head of the Nepean goaltender. Adamn Farr, playing fullback, blasted a bullet past the Nepean goaltender. In the seni-final game Whitby again met Nepean. Johnson started Whitby off with a beautiful left-footed shot for a 4uick 1-0 lead at the two-minute mark. Nepean tied the game before the half and took a 2-1 lead late in the gaine. Whitby put forth detormined pressure for the lest five minutes, but came up short with a 2-1 loss. In recent league play, Witby defeated Thornhill 3-1. With Nick Wood in goal, Wolves played a scoreless first half. In the second haif, Whitby connected for three goals: Ryan Smith converted on a successful penalty shot, Tim Grieder was sent into the clear on an accurate pass froin Scott McDavid and McDavid completed the scoring, converting passes from Dillon, Osborne and Schleiffer. Whitby was favoured to win this years classic, going in with a record of 24 wins, one loas and three tdes. Whitby met Peterborough' in1 gaine one, a tearn they had defeated ail season, but came out a little nervous and very fiat. Peterborough opened the scoring with two very quick goals and were in command moet of the game. Although Whitby got close a couple of turnes they couldn't close the two-goal spread. Whitby's big guns camne out roaring in gamne two. Whitby overcame a fine team. froin Six Nations by a one-sided score of 10-3. In gamne three, the opposition was Kitchener-Waterloo, a team that has given Whitby some great garnes this year. However, Whitby rolled to a 10-2 score, and had some fine goaltending by Scott Wylie, setting up the semni-final between these two teains. Whitby could only muster two goals in the hard-fought, semi-final against Kitchener- Waterloo, meeting a strong goaltender and having three goals disallowed. Whitby's goaltender Justin YelIe, wh allowed Kitchener to score on five occasions, was frustrated by his team's lack of offence. Kitchener played one of their fineat gaines of the season and went on to meet Peterborough in the final, winning 8-6.
