TRAINER LORI MCINERNEY with 'One Easy Dash,' which set a new track record in winning the rment $33,000 'rags to riches futurity' at Picov Downs. Racetrack in Ajax. Photo by Mark Reesor, Whihy Free Press Locals' Dash' 'One Eay to -ricehes' By Mark Reesor Racing quarter herses is just liko drag racing cars, says jockoy John McInerne4r, one of the top riders in North Amorica. "As seon as the gate s opon, they take off. "Thoy're s pïinter-s; ,the second stride out 1the gaotey'ré at full spoed,» adds wife Leri, who grew up in Brooklin and holps te train the 10 herses the coupIle manage at Picev Downs in Ajax. Quarter herses are short-legged. and stocky, brod te, race short distances. Unlike longer races, in which strategy and holding serne- thing in reserve plays a big part, quarter herses let loose right from the gate and den't lot up unti I the finish line, John s'ays of the quarter-mile races. Abdyig part of a quarter herse jockey's job is building up his steed's confidence, says.John.1 "Herses road humans botter than humnans read humans... if you have confidence, thon they have confidence.» Trust between herse and rider is another important factor. "They have to trust you before they do anything .e] se... a four-year-old herse is like a-four-year-old ch'il d." To build up that trust, John spends a lot of tino with his herses. He's generally at the stable by 5 a.m. and, aside from a daily two-heur or se shift galleping theroughbreds at Woedbine Racetrack, is at Picov the, entire day, stayring-as late a s 10:30 p.m. The long heurs pay off. Last year ho became the first Canadian te win, theArnerican Cengress -Futurity,, one of the richest quarter'herse races. The race was held tho saine weekendl the Toronto Blue Jays wen their second World Series, says Lori. Thie World Series was on the Saturday night and the race, Sunday -- and Ainerican fans weren't tee impressed. "Oh yeah, first win the Werld Series and tho *n corne back eut and win the futurity. 'You damn Canadian, gohome,' that's what they wore yelling at us," she says. John attributes inuch of his success te the high quality herses hie and Lori are given te ride and train, many of which are owned by Durham Region residents. "We have a lot of geod breeders... (and) goed herses make good trainers. » Lori, who grew up inl Brooklin and Works at Ivan's Hairstyling in Whitby, aise sponds a lot of timo at the track. In fact, that's where she first met John. Twe of her, charges, 'One Easy Dash' (ridden by <John) and 'Downtewn Dash,' were first and second respectively in the richest quarter herse race in Eastorn Canada, the $33,000 'ragys te niches futurity' race at Picov. John and 'One Easy Dash' aIse shaved more than a tenth of a second off the track record, which was set by another Mclnerney-trained herse. It was the second straight year thiey had the top two herses in the race. Their herses aise finished first ('Choques in Tixne,' aIse ridden by John), secend and third in the 'rags te riches' consolation race. The secret te, training a herse is "a lot ef love and care, that's the most important t ~ng,"ILori says. - "Just like an athlete, a herse has a lot of leg preblens," she says. One important part of lher job is bandaging a herses legs with a poultice -- like a mud pack -- te draw heat frein the leg. "It relieves pressure and pain in the leg,» she explains. The Mclnerneys will be ia action at the final two races of the soason, the next two Sunday afterneens at Picev Downs, off Highway 2 east of Harwoed Road in Ajax..
