The opening gaine in Belleville saw the Whitby club short of players due. te suspensions received in, an earlier teurnament. But Whitby got the first p*rod rolling on a goal by Dan Ricica from the blueline. Quinte then tied the score. The second period began with Quinte getting an early goal te take the lead. Steve Death and Mark Haynes scored to give Whidtby1 lead heading into the third. The lead was short-lived as Quinte producéed two goals in the first four minutes. Death scored on a play b Haynes and Paul Gray. With the gaine tied at 4-4 and five minutes remaining, Haynes scored on a backhand shot te the upper corner of the net to ensure the win. Solid forechecking and backchecking throughout the game by Dave Farquharson, Bryan Crouch, Mim DaSilva and Justin Collins proved to be very frustratin-g for the speedy Quinte teai. The Whitby Wildcats minor atom AAA hockey club, sponsored by Fortune Financial, opened the new season with a win and a loss in a par of home games over the .weekend On Saturday, Wildcats lest 4-3 te Quinte Red Devils. Wildcats got the early lead in the game when Michael Kosiw intercepted a Red Devil pass at the blueline and sent Brandon McBide in on a breakaway with a perfect pass. Less than a minute later, Tyler Harrison converted a Ronnie Robertson pass. Early in the second period, Wildcats widened their lead te a 3-O when Sean Hill stopped clearing attempts and -fed a cross-ice pass te Jef Seedhouse whose shot from the point caught the corner. Quinte made the score 3-1 befor> the end of the second on a scrafmble in front of the net. The third period saw Red Devils pressure Wildcats the entire period, finally scoring their second goal with just over two minutes te play. Red Devils scored two more goals in the late stages to squeak out the victory. Wildcats defeated Central Ontario Wolves 8-4 on Sunday afternoon. Just like the first gaine Cats opened up a three-goal lead, McBride scoring two and Robertson the other. Wade Branch assisted on two of the goals. Wolves scored early in the second te make the score 3-1. Unlike Saturday, however, Wildcats would not allow their opponents to take control of the gaine. Whitby made the score 4-1 less than a minute later when Sean Pitcher converted. Wolves scored two goals to make it close, but Wildcats regained a two-goal advantage when a Paul Ranger shot found the twine late in the perîod. Central Ontario narrowed the The defence, consisting of Mike Cartwright,' Ricica, Mike Robertson and Ryan McCarron, saw considerable ice time but managed te play a solid ail-round gaine. Head coach for this season is Kent MacCarl, assistant coach Rick Fletcher, tramner Kerri Powell and manager Gord Hawker. Season home openier wiIl be Saturday, Oct. 1,- 4 p.m., at Iroquos Park against Oshawa.
