Hospitals issue HIV alert The six general hpiasin Durham Region, =houhits umbrella organization, the Hospital Council of Durham Region, will coordinate efforts to alert former patients to a possble health risk, says Jim Armstrong, director of the council. "Patients who received transfusions of blood or blood products between 1978 and 1985 may have been exposed to H1V, the virus which leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS," says Armstrong.. "Sorne former patients may flot be aware that they received any transfusion as part of their treatment in hospital."- Members of the council have been working together to identifS' former patients and notify, them of the potential risk of exposure i f, they have received transfusions during those years. 1"By working' together, -we feel we will reach miore prople in a more , cost-effective and respo nsible manner," he said. )Nw we will be attempting to contact approximately 5,000 former patients by a combination of either registered letters sent directly to them or through notification by their physician," said Armstrong. To compile this list, hospitals have checked their blood, transfusion and health records. The hospital council has recomrnended that' individuals should not wait for a letter if they have reason to'believe'that they may béat risk.
