E M-.à~inn Tory review of 'Dan' To the editor: An open letter to Dan McTeague, Ontario riding MP Dear Dan: As you rapidly approach the first anniversary of your electoral victory, I would suspect that you are feeling pretty good. After aIl, think of your many accomplishments and those of your party, which have served to make Canada not only stronger but better than it would have been had the Tories prevailed. For a moment let me recount- your rise to prominence and detail just what it is that makes you so deserving of our support and respect. You have served feverishly on behaif of Ontario riding as a Liberal member of the committee on bilingualism. 1, like you, believe that our MP's time should not be squandered on little issues such as finance or trade. I agree that bilingualism is the key to an improved standard of living in Ontario riding. I applaud your leadership arid firm "hand at the wheel" which you applied to the government's request for debate and direction on the issue of Canadian peacekeepers in the former Yugoslavia. To paraphrase you, "If the government decides to go in, I will support you. If the government decides not to go in, I will support you." It is reminscent of Winston Churchill. As for constituency work, on t his point, you are excused. If anyone yells "plagiarism" just get out your red book and let them know that it was all laid out on page 317. As for crime and public safety, call me crazy, but I feel safer. I feel safer knowing Sergio Marchi clamped down on new immigrants while granting amnesty to thousands of illegal immigrants. I couldn't agree more that as soon as you bring out tougher gun control measures, the criminais will all recognize their evil ways and dedicate themselves to community service. And thank you for stepping in and putting an end to the diabolical Tory plan to see the land which Trudeau had expropriated sold back to its original owners at less than market value, while keeping an airport designation which would have prevented any future dumps. in the area. Boycott hurts needy To the editor: The recent avow by the Sikh and Jewish groups who advocated to disrupt and boycott the annual poppy fund drive, because of the Canadian Legion's belief and tradition to honour fallen war heroes by its headgear restriction in its clubrooms, will not affect the Legion financially but will certainly jeopardize the needy in the communit . It shourd be mentioned that the poppy funds canvassed are restricted for use, such as purchasing of poppies, wreaths and supplies for promoting the poppy campaign to honour the dead on Remembrance Day; for bursaries to students; for comforts to the disabled and hospitalized veterans (they do not have to be a member of the Canadian Legion), and for expenditures to purchase and repair housing furnishings for the elderly or disabled persons. The 'safety' issue To the editor: I would like to inform residents that the streetlight at the southwest corner of Ashburn Road and Robmar Street in Brooklin died some weeks ago. A telephone call to the department concerned with the well-being of the streetlights informed me that it would take another two and three weeks to resurrect it. Surely these lights could be inspected nightly and replaced the following day. Barring that, they could install a computerized· board in the maintenance department dis- playing every light in the district, and they could see at a glance where-trouble exist s. I am also led to believe that the mayor and his councillors have co-erced the traffic light department to adjust the lights at the corner of Brock and Rossland to minimize their delay in comings and goings to the municipal offices. The present management at Town hall is not facing the important issues of residents (i.e. protection, convenience and well-being). Let's throw them aIl out at the forthcoming election on Nov. 12 and hope that we may elect representatives who will not cater to their self-interests and who will face the important issues of safety and protection. It could save a life, perhaps yours. Perhaps the general public will now have a better idea of the purpose of the poppy fund drive and continue to strongly support it. Good luck To the editor: After reading the article, 'Montgomery residents want curbs,' (Whitby Free Press, Sept. 21), I felt I had to respond to the concern of the residents of Montgomery Street in Brooklin regarding installing curbs. We also have the same problem in Whitby. A few years ago I took up a petition regarding installing curbs in our area (west ward). A deputation was tabled, recorded and submitted to Town council. To date, the centre ward has received most of the attention in this regard, and the west ward has been put off for an indefinite period of time. The residents in our area have been waiting for 40 years. I hope the residents of Montgomery Street have better luck than we have had, and wish them well. Ron Snyder Whitby
