Our very first Spirit Week was a success due mainly to the numerous events that were held. On Monday there was the Chubby Bunny contest. Congrats to Ashieigh Crowder who piaced first overali with an amazing 15 marshmaliows. Congrats. are aiso extended to Adam Harker, Amanda Pike and Chris Broad who won their sections of the contest. On Tuesday the airhead contest got an excellent response. On Wednesday it was 'Winter Stufi' day as well as the genie auction. Thursday was my personal favouite, with the genies and masters performing their tasks. t was aiso disco day, and the pizza sales ail added up te a fun-filled day. The outfits on the guys were especiaiiy entertaining, sporting new fashion trends in skirts and tops. Last, but not least, there was 'Surf Day' and the hair auction. You've neyer e'een hair like Mfike Jackson's before this. As weiI, thanks te Lindsay Coulter for her cooperation. Purpie hair raised a substantial amount in the auction. Overali, our first Spirit Week was entertaining and eventful -- a job weli done by the SAC. In other schoel news, our drama club's debut wiii be on Nov. 30, in bocks C and D, performing 'But Listen' and 'A Girl In The Mirror.' Tickets will cost $3 with a SAC sticker and $4 vhithout a SAC stieker. Seating wiil be reserved, se the sooner you buy your ticket, the better your seat wili be. Students of the week are Doris Yan, Richard Keys and Jennifer Flanders, first, second and third respectivey in the Whitby Branch Legion's Remembrance Day poster contest. In sporting news, the midget girls' basketball team had a win over Denis O'Connor to assure a place in the LOSSA semi-finals. Later in the week the girls were defeated in a close gaine. Congratulations te, the girls for .AIR SECONDARY SCHOO04 an excellent first season. 'Yearbooks are on sale for $25. You cari purchase them from your TAG teacher or a yearbook representative. -Aise, next Wednesday there wili be a bowling trip during periods B and C. You cari pick up your permission formn from the phys-ed office. Last, but not least, you can stili pick up a premission formn for either 'Joseph and The Technicolour Dreamcoat' or 1'Showboat' in February and June respectively. Permission forms cari be picked up in the resource centre. Recently, I asked for your opinions about Wednesdays. I received a varied response in the likes and dislikes about the program. I have separated the results inte the following categories: e People who like the time te catch up on assignments. e People who enjoy the later start. a People who feel there are a lot of activities te, choose from. e People who prefer the athletic activities. *People who prefer the aademic or generai interest activities. The resuits were as follows: five per cent said they like the time te catch up on assignments; 36 per cent said they enjoyed the later start; 24 per cent said that they feit there are a lot of activities te, choose from; 25 per cent said they prefer athietic activities; five per cent said they prefer academic or general interest activities. Quite a varied repense ... but basicaliy we like our Wednesdays. For those who would like te, improve their English language skills, whether it be for writing, conversation or job search skills, the Durham Region separate school board now offers two programs of aduit study in Whitby. The programs are part-time and fuil-time and are simultaneously being offered at the Giffard Centre at 1003 Giffard St. Both courses are free te adults and teens who are permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants and citizens). The first prograin is a literacy class for those who want te, irnprove their reading, writing and/or number skills. Each student is assessed on-site and has an individualized course of study according te, their needs. The class runs M onday te Friday from 9 te 11:30 a.m. The second program is an English as a second lariguage (ESL) course suitable for al levels. Major topics of instruction include conservation and pronunciation skills, grammar, Canadian culture and job search skills.
