The Wednesday night gaine in Oshawa was a very fast-paced affair with relatively few penalties 'and good scoring chances for both teains. Oshawa was first on the board, only to be answered by Whitby a minute later when Mark Haynes scored. Oshawa responded quickly with another goal and was up 2-1 at the end of the first. Matt Capson evened the score in the second. Oshawa netted two goals towards the end *of the second ta go up 4-2. Midway inta the- third, Oshawa managed another goal ta rnake it 5-Dave Farquharson then seemed ta catch the Oshawa goalie off guard with a hard wrist shot. Paul CIray added another marker after a strong rush to the net. Whitby pulled their goa]ie with a minute remaining for the inan advantage but were unable te get the tie. Goalie Dan Fletcher faced 20 shots on the night. M1ichael Jeffery was in net. Later that same day, Whitby met Aurora and again came up short, in a 4-2 battle. PLAYOFFS After defeating Ajax in two straight games, Wildcats defeated Markham Thunder in the first gante of the second round* of playoff action. Whitby got off' te a slow start and trailed 1-0 when MacMurray scored on a nice passing play from Aaron Maguire and Wayne Turcotte. Down 2-1 late in the gaine, Thomas Farquharson scored te send the gaine into overtinie. The action in overtime went back and forth until MacMurray scored with 21 seconds remaining in the gaine. Whitby later tied it, with 16 seconds left, on a goal by Kenny Henry, assisted by Philip Mcllhone and Justin Fox, with their goale out and a Whitby man in the penalty box. Ajax scored in overtime. On Feb. 5 in Wellington, Whitby inounted a third period comeback te beat Quinte 4-3. Trailing 3-1 after two periods, Wildcats stormed back with three goals te steal a win from'the very strong Quinte squad. Backed by the goaltending of Joel Whitinarsh, Whitby got goal froin Dan VonEschscholtz and Matt H-ircock before Ryan Mathews scored the winner. Robbie Gawne had two assists.
