Cotter, born in 1891 in the Methodist parsonage at Smith- ville, Ont., attended the ladies' college where ber teachers indlu- ded Thonmas Galrand Greene and Châles Maconald Maniy. She understudied Florence' MeGillivray and succeeded ber as resident art teacher in 19 11. There is a distinct group of work whicb belongs to the 'Wbitby Years,' 1911-22, wben Cotter was closely aligned with the emerging Canadian art inovement of the time. .The work shows the influences of Greene, Manly -and McGilliv- rayWhile atcolee, she pain- ted, glazed and fired Frýench china in the art nouveau stye reflecting ber interest in the near abstract. After a brief study cf commer- cial art at the School of Fine and Applied Art, New York City, in 1922. Cotter married in 1923 and moved witb ber husband te Jamaica where sbe pain ted until 1960.
