About 1906 in Toronto, Thomson began to seriously study art; by about 1908 he was working in Grip Iàmited, the same commercial art house as JXI.L MacDonald. There ho began to develop bis talent for painting. In the second decade of the century ho became friendly with Fred Varley, Arthur iAsmer, Lawren H[arris and'A.Y. Jackson. Later they went on ta, found the Group of Seven (in 1920). Thomson, a miqjor influence in Canadian art, was a forerunner of the Group.
