Mac"lea wins east Canada tleti e Malcolm Maclea of Palmerston Public School completed an un- defeated season by capturing gold at the eastern Canadian wrestling championships in Sud- buryreent. Marclea, twho had previously won the Ontario title, was first in the 47.5-kilogram class of the kids (aged il and 12) division. Andrew Boumns of Glen Dhu Public School won a silver medal in the kids division, 47-kilogram class. Ian Mackenzie of Dr. Robert Thornton won a bronze medal at the Canada East competition, in the bantami (aged 13 and 14) class. Brett White-Finkle of Palmer- ston was fourth in bantain, 38.5- kilograin class. Harness helps seniors win 2 gamnes Whitby Melanie Pringles opened the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association senior league season with two wins in the past week. Jeremy Harness hit asingle in the seventh înning te, knock in what proved te, be the winning run in a 5-4 win over Oshawa on Tuesday last week in Whitby's home and season opener at Iro- quois Park. He also pitched the ninth in- ning, giving up an unearned run, to et the save. Gee Rainey, who pitched the fifth., sixth and seventh innings, got the win. Jef Hardy gave up twc> runs as started and went four innlings Steve Dôýrmer, pitched the eighth inning. Oshawa held a 2-0 lead until the fifth when, Dave Imeson smnacked a two-run double. Har- ness hit a single to drive in the third run. Doug McCorkell, who had ear- lier singled, got the fourth Whitby run when he scored from third base on a «Mike Macapagal fielder's choice hit. On Saturday, Harneas had four singles in five trips to the plate and drove in three runs as Whitby downed Markham 11-4. ]Rainey started for Whitby and went three innings as Markham took a 4-3 lead. Donner camne on in the fourth and pitched effectively until the eighth inning while the Whitby bats came alive. Whitby scored a run in the fifth and three in the seventh te, take a 7-4 lead. Harness struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth te get the save, while Whitby aded four more runs. Donner also had a sm fle and a double while Mike Pulton and Rainey each hit two sm lies. The high]ight of the gaine was a home run powered over the fenoe by Terry Anges who scored two nune in the game. Other hitters in the gaine were Darnyl Jennings, Jason ià nden, Greg Pomnroy, Chris Going and Jared McCord. Goring started the gaine and pitched one no-hit inning but had te be replaced because of a sore arin. Dave Slute came in and pitched four strong innings and Aaron Lo took the mound. The final inning was pitched by Dave Hough te hold Ajax te only two runs. Infield and outfield was enror-free and looked te be ready te face all coners this year. Warriors led 6-2 after the first period and coasted the rest. of the Jonas Derks led the way with three goals and four assists, Marty CYBrien was close behind with two goals and four assists. Steve Voituk, Shaydon Santos and Mike F'iyer had two, goals each with singles from Derek Suddons, Gavin Prout and Jason Crosbie. The gaine got- chippy in the third period. Dave Stabile and Derek Suddons waded in for Warriors te, show they. weren't going te be pushed around. Coach Jim Bishop was pleased with the win and the effort te take the running gamne te Peterborough. With numerous fast breaks, Whitby had a large edge in shots and without the work of Jamie Yale in the Peterborough net, the score could have been much higher. Mike Wye went the distance in net for Whitby and Is play strengthened his position as the present nuxnber one goalie. Being* early in the season, there were quite a few defensive lapses and Bishop plans te work this week te correct those tendencies.
