The authority is one of only 19 recipients of the award. aeross Canada. The award is named to honour the late Elaine Burke, who initiated the "Active Living Go For Green' prograni. The prograni is designed to recognize communities across Canada that have shown- outstanding citizenship for active living and the environment. As a result of receiving the 1994 Community Parks -Week award, Active Living Go For Green, in *association with the Ontario Parks Association, nominated CLOCA for the award. The authority will receive $1,000, through the cooperation of Tree Plan Canada, towards the purchase of seedlings to ho planted ini area- conservation areas during Community Parks Week Oct. 1-7. The authority will also ho provided with wildfiower seeds donated by Mackenzie Seeds. The seeds will be used to renaturalize sites within the conservation areas. The Durham Region District Health Council (DHC) is accepting applications for 'Healthy Community' grants funding. The program, funded and managed by the Ministry of Health, encourages people to take part in promoting health and develop workable ways to resolve problemns that may affect health. The range of issues that can affect health include basic needs (food,, water, shelter, income, safety), physical environment lifestyle, a supportive social newrkad the economy. Any community group may apply for the funding as long as an incorporated non-profit agency is designated to receive and manage project funds. 1Proposais submitted to the Durham Region DHC should ho for one-time funding of no more than $10,000. An information session will ho held on Aug.. 10 to further explain the grants program. Cail the DHC at 433-4262 for more information.
