With some of the proceeds from a videotape the club made about the 'Great Canadian Flying Circus' at Heber Down last year,, $500 was donated -to Heber Down. The funds will go toward the establishment of a -play structure for disabled chikiren. Photo by Pete« Nlaâ, MWhy Fme Press Fees acceptable. tomost residet SB y Usa Gardner There h ave been a few com- plaints, but for the most part visitors have no qualms abut paying the newly established entrance fee te Heber Down Con- servation Area. That's what Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority staff have found since the sum- mer admission fee of 50 cents per person or $2 per vehicle was begun earlier this year. «êMost people seem quite wil- ling te pay ît,» e Ander- sen, a member of the Heber Down staff, noting that a user fee is the preference of many o ver higher taxes to raise revenue te maintain conserva- tinn areas. "The fee le experimental at the moment." says. Rick Clow of CLOCA. «We would like te see how we administer it." Clow says provincial and municipal grants as well as pri- vate donations no longer provide enough money to maintain. parks , so a number of conserva- tmon authorities are charging fees. "Some of the smailer-sized authorities are, for example, clos- ing conservation areas because they cant àoperate them,» says Clow. Shelter moved A bus shelter which was set on fire three times last year and once this year is being removed. The shelter, on the east sida of Anderson Strdfet just south of Lofthouse Drive, has been van- dalized more often than anY other in Whitb, according te public worksirector Wayne Hancock. At the urging of west ward councillor Dennis Fox, Hancock agreed te consider reinstalling the shelter about a year from now. There is as yet ne fee te enter Lynde Shores, Whitby's other conservation area. "'It is a case really of the need of the conservation area. The use of Heber Downs is high, se of course it has additional costs,» says Clow. Fee revenue doesn't provide new facilities in the parks, it just replaces grants no longer receî- yodl by CLOCA. The conservation areas still rely on donations to provide new or improved facilities. Heber Down, for example, recently received $500 from the Whitby Aero Modellers, a club that stages events at the area. Tlhose funds will go teward the cost of a play structure for dis- abled children. Answers. to Whitby Trvia from page 15 1.
