Whltby Free Press, Wednesday, August 2, 199M.Page 7 __fe tif 'VIT7à 5 There are two reasons for using special effeets in movies: o the plot, or story, requiries certain things to happen. Or, because the director likes them and has the budget to do stugf regardless of what the plot, or story, requires. You can find examples of both applications in two faniily movies currently drawing good crowds and positive reviews: Free Willy 2 and vhe Indian in the Cuphoard. In Free Wily 2 we see special effects mainly for reason two, although in some twisted way the story does depend on it. That shouldn't be a surprise. The original Free Wily M showed that an Orca whale can actually juxnp a rock- ballast breakwater twenty feet wide. If you believed that - and I know a three-year-old who still does -- you won't have any trouble with Free Willy 2. Let us get it straight: Free Wily 2 is a freely hokey, feel- good family movie that stretches the bounds of credibility. Nothing wrong with that, of course. The best of movies always have. To get the full impact of Free Wily 2 you should first go ........ out and buy Free Willy (the original), And watch it 186 times over a six-month period. That set of characters burned into your oerebral cortex, you are set to enjoy FW2. FW2 follows the saine family, the saine characters, four years after the original Willy had been freed. They find Willy, who this turne is threatened by a leaking oil tanker. Jesse and Randolph find Willy, then ahnost lose hum in the oil slick Thanks te special effects, robot-simulated whales and digital animation, we get a burning oil slick, a helicopter rescue, a boy riding an Orca under the burnin g oul slick, and a whale that will kiss you on the lips. It almost sounds like overkill. It also pushes ail the emotional family buttons. But it does it well enough te suspend your disbelief until you are well out of the parking lot. This one will be a must-have addition to the kids' tape library. k'1ý I had the advantage of viewing The Indian in the Cupboard with a group of six girls attending a ten-year- old's birthday part .Ate.htngt.redtebo o the1f firt ure.Th mv cosly olow-te oo, r1te question every movie director with a special effects budget 35 YERSAGO struggles with. from the Thursday, July 28, 1960 edition of the WHITBY WEEKLY NEWS Fortunately, the director of The Indian in the Cuphoard The Monica Smith of the Swedish-Chicago line was the first ocean-going ship to dock deals with tIs Iquestion better than did the director of at Whitby Harbour.
