The 47 teains were divided lunto four separate tournaments, with Oakville, Streetsviile und Ctarkson each hosting 12 teams and the teuruament the Whitby Ohiefs played at, Burlington, hosting 11. The Whitby Chiefs inor mosquito basebail team, sponsored by Mine Qulp, won ail five of their games te secure not only the tournament, but a trip ta the Ontario Basebail Association finals on the Labor Day weekeud. Whitby started the teurn ament on Friday, beating a teain froin Streetsville 9-2. Grog Williams pitched four outstanding inmings with the win while Derek Junkcin sat ail nino battons he faced in the last throe innings. On Saturday, Wbitby defeated a talented group from Waterloo 10-6 who also qualified with one loss. Kevin Wallace led the offonce with two singles, a triple and two RBIs. Kyle Branson ailowod only two rune on four innings pitched to earn the wiu but Jason Gardons three up, three down in the fifth, combined with Jeif Freeman's unboliovable double play, seomed the knock the wind from Waterloo's sails. As the day got hotter, s0 did the Chiofs as they then beat Brantford 12-2. The catching plateon of Andrew Braithwaite and Scott Bird seemed ta have Brantford's number as they continuaily threw out base rnnor after base runner. Grog Wllamos picked Up bis second win of the tournament, p'itching four innings and ailowing only two unearnod runs. Kyle Simpson also pitched an inning allowing no runs and striking out one. On Sunday morning Whitby playod the hast team from Burlington and eked out a 6-5 win. Chris Bowler's booming RBI, double set the toue early iu the first as Wbitby's bats would pound out a much needed 12 bits. Kyle Branson allowed two bits iu four innings pitohed earning hlm bis second win of the touruament. Iromically Whitby would meet Pickering, one of their eastern division rivals in the championship game. After eliniinating Pickering two weeks ago lu the Eastenn'Ontario Basobaîl Association championsbip, Whitby was preparing for battle. Miko Moissis'furst iuning single started the gane's bit parade that showed no mercy for their oppouent. When the dust fiually settled, Whitby secured an OBA birth ou a 10-0 taunnament championsbip win. Greg Williams pitchod fivo innings, pickcing up bis third tournament win. Outstaudlng defensive plays like Sean Cunningham's, Robento Alomar lile puteut, froin his knoes frustratod the Pickering offenco. After coniing back in their semi- final series to defeat Brampton, Brooklin Redmen are again having to play catch-up to reinain in the Ontarjo major lacrosse final against Six Nations. Led by a four goal performance from Gary Gait and two markers by Jason Croshie, one of three Wihitby Warriors called up for the series, the Redinen edged, the Brampton Excelsiors 9-7 last week Tbings3 didn't go as weil against the Chiefs though; Brooklil dropped the opener 17-9 Friday night and was beaten 15-9 Monday evening at Iroquois Park Paul Gait inficted much of the damage in both, matches, rackIng up six goals and three assista in the fsrst game and netting another six in game two. John Tavares waa also strong, bagging, two goals and three assista ini game one and four in game two. Jerry Ziellnski's aggressive play on the fonwand lino resulted lu a goal by Plastina for a final 3-1 win. In the third gaine of the day, Whitby faced the DSC Express froin Buffalo. Neither teain had much enengy, as the referee stated that it was the most "gentlemauly gaine ho had refereed in a long tino." DSC Express notched two goals before Whitby woke up.
