Radiation dose due to emissions fromn the nuclear generating. stations. Dose is reported in microsieverts (pSy), an international unit used to measure dose. DARLINGTON April 1 to Jun e 30, 1995: previous quarter: YEAR TO DATE: 3.8 f rom a single chest X-ray: about PICKERING ro' posed legal lmit for dose from emissions: 1000 per year - April 1 to June 30, 1995: - previous quarter: ..-YEAR TO DATE: -Dose from a single chest X-ray: about 4.1 2.7 6.8 70 Note: Natural background radiation, the annual le gai limit for station emissions, and the dose from a typical X-ray are provided for reference. Emissions are in addition to background radiation. The radiation doses due to emissions are for the most exposed persons living near the station. They would typically apply to persons living just outside the station boun dary who are at their residences 24 hours a day, who drink local water and milk, and eat focal fish and produce. The doses were calculated using actual data [rom ro utine analysis of air, water, milk, fish and vegetation samples, as well as station emission data. Most persons would actually receive less than the doses indicated because they have different eating habits or live [arther away from the station. Radiation doses decrease signi[icantly as the distance [rom the station increases. Persons living midway between the two stations would therefore receive less than the doses indicated for either of the stations'. Less than 2% of the radiation dose received [rom the stations was due to liquid emissions, while the remainder was a result of airborne emissions.
