Page 9 Ceremonies to recogmize former mayors, Queen' s Plate wmners At a noon-hour ceremony at the corner of Byron and Mary streets on Heritage Day, Sept. 9, LACAC wilI present pictures of the Queen's Plate when it was run at Whitby in 1870 tu Amne and Bon Shaddock and their daughter Lesley Anne McLean, wife of Vancouver Canueka' goaltender Kirk McLean. Their horse, Regal Discovery, was an upset winner of this year's Queen's Pate held at Woodbine raoetrack in Toronto on July 9. Regal Discoverys great- grandfather was the farned Northen Dancer, who won the Queen's Plate in 1964. MAYORS HONOURED Whitby's mayors will be recognized on Heritage Day as part of the Town's l4Oth anniversary celebrations. Six mayors, including current mayor Tom Edwards, will be presentedl with plaques by the Whitby Local Architectural Conservation Advisor Committee (LACAC) at the noon-hour ceremony at the corner of Bryon and Mary streets. The mayors are Harry Jermyn (1950-59), Warren Mowat (1964- 65), Des Newman (1966-75), Jim <artéhore (1975-80), Bob Attersley (1980-91) and Tom Edwards (mayor since 1991). Jermyn, celebrated bis 92nd" birthday in June. MAYFIELD One of Whitby's finest heritage houses will celebrate 4ts lSOth anniversary on Heritage Day. The house, named May/Zeld, was buiît at the northwest corner of Garden Street and Manning Road in 1845 by John Thomson. The bouse is unique in Whitby because it te constructed of limestone blocks imported from ingeton. It is the only house in Wbitby still in its original condition buiît entirely of Kingston limestone. The original Thomson farm consieted of 300 acres until Thomson's death in 1866. The stone house remained in the family until 1905. The present owners, Durham Centre MPP James Flaherty and Chrietine Elliott, purchased the house in 1987, and have maintained the interior and exterior of the house in excellent condition. ALL SARNT Ail Saints' Anglican Church, one of Whitby9e Most historic buildings, will be open to the public on Héritage Day. 1rrom 10 a.m. te 3 p.m., guides from the congregation will show visitors throh the church and Library, now the law offices of Flaherty, Dow & Elliott, at 132 Dundas St. W. Aise entertaining audiences will be children's singing group Away We Go With Annie & Mo, as wel as the Whltby Brass Band, Whltby Courthouse Theatre, the County Town Singera and musician Meredith Cutting. The main branch of the Whitby -Public Llbrary will host -Fanuly Storytelling' from 10:15 te il a.m. (telephone registration only). Aise, participating in the day's events will be Trafalgar Castle School, Whitby Mental Health Centre, Whitby-Oshawa Genealogical Society, - Whitby Archives, Pickering Museum Village and Oshawa Sydenham Museum. Town arcbivist Brian Winter will hoot bis annual walkcing tour, this year featuring homes along Byron Street North and Centre Street North.
