'Vl.OBITUARIES Former OMHA president dies at 81 GORDON HAWES A former prosident of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, Gordon Douglas Hawos died at Oshawa General Hospital on Aug. 27, 1995. Ho was 81.' A son of the lato Thomas Hawes and Agnes Mowat, ho was born in Whitby on Sept. 1, 1913-and lived at 210 Gilbert St. E. A resîdent of Whithy al bis life, Mr. Hawes was a retired carpenter and furniture maker. One of the early members of the Kinsmen Club of Whitby, ho was the club's président in 1946-47 and was named as its first life member in 1956. For nearly 50 years Mr. Hawes was involved ini sports, particularly hockey, at both local and provincial levels. His hockey career 6egan at age 18 in 1931 when hé becamo the. youngest secretary of the. Wbitby Hockey Association,1 and irn the 1930s he was a convener for the Ontario Hockey Association. Mr. Hawes was one of the founders of the Whitby Minor Hockey Association ina 1943-44 and was manager of the Whitby juvenle hockey team that won the Ontario championship in1944. He was coach or manager of many other local hockey teams._ Ina 1951 ho became a convener for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, a position he held for more than 20 years. As convener, ho was responsible for scheduling games for more than 200 teame made up of more than 1,500 boys ina eastern Ontario, and assigned and trained referees for games from Toronto to Kingston. He traveiled throughout 0Oitario, speaking at minor hockey banquets, and his home was an open hous. for hockey people fromn all over the province. Ina 1955 Mr. Hawes was elected to the. executiveof the. Ontario Minor Hockey Association and served as president in 1968-9. Mr. Hawes worked closely with bis wife Jean who was an equal partner in ail bis sports work. Mr. Hawes also helped to start the Lakeshore Juvenile Basebal Léeague ina the mid-1940s and served as secrtary for a softball beague ina the 1930a. Ho was also president of the Whitby Men's Bowling League ina the late 1940s and early 1950s. On JuIy 21, 1962, Mr. Hawes was married in Whitby to the former Ellen Jean Matthew, who died on Jan. 14, 1994. Brothers, George and Frank also died before him. Mr. Hawes is survived by daughters Doreen (Mrm. Larry Kendall) of Utica and Lorna (Mrs. Max Bolchenski) of Oshawa; 6 Generations of Service, Quality & Trust graradeMidron Jim Kendall, Mark Kndall (and bis wife Uà sa), Sherri Brown (and lier husband AI), Chrystal Fanning- (and her husband John) and Camerora Mouratenay (and bis wife Angela); and four great-grandchildrea. She was 80. Mrs. Lindsey had been a residerat of Sunnycrest Retirement Villa for a number of years. A daughter of the bat. Elgin and Marjorie Larader, she was borninr Oshawa on Aug. 14, 1915. Mrs. Lindsey is survived by son Scott (and bis wife Judi) of Orillia, grandchildrea Gregory, Jeffrey anad Robert, many nieces arad nephews, brother David Larader of Oshawa anad sister Alice Morrisora of Wbitby. Her husbarad, Dr. George W. Lindsey, whom she married ira Oshawa ira 1941, died March 29, 1979. A daughter, Joanne, also died before ber. Mis. CECIL BROWN Cecil James Brown of Whitby died at Oshawa Goneral Hospital on Aug. 27, 1995. He- was 76.- Ho was borninir Priceville, Ont., on Dec. 2, 1918, son of James arad Chritena (McDonald) Brown. A principal of* Murfin Heatirag and Cooling Ltd., Mr. Brown was a Royal Canadiara Air Force veteran.
