Services, give childi-en personal ID numbers and a 1-800 telephone number that can be attached ta, clothing, sports equipment and shoes, and is intended ta, identify children and notify their parents efficiently in emergency situations.. Parents who purchase child I.D. tags for their childi-en complet. a confidential emergency information record- (CEIR) providing the child's name, address médical information, a physical description of the child and the phone niunbers of family and alternate contacts. By calling the 1-800 number on the' tags, an operator at the. 24-hour response centre, located in California, pi-avides police and medical agencies with necessary information from the child's record, while parents are notified. Loi-ne Schnurr, Durham Region ares distributor of Child Net I.D., Idts suggests many other benefits of the pi-agi-arn. "ChildNet labels will save police officers' and taxpayer's dollars because cf manhours that they would have ta, take (ta identitfr a child)," he says. Noting that hospitals need a signature from the parent ta perform operations, ChildNet warks ta contact parents or emergency contacts mare qicly, h. says. ChildNet labels are better than fingerprints or identification bracelets because prints are flot. immediately helpful and bracelets are easily lost, according ta Child I.D. Services. OhiidNet I.D. labels are intended mainly as a preventive measure Ita help childi-en in any Idnd cf emergency situation from being lest ta being abducted.' The procesa of registering childi-en and updating information is don. in a confidential manner, as pi-ocedure requires passwords for each. child's record and call-backs ta verif~y a legitimate caller. "We have- not had on. bad response," says Schnurr of the I.D. labels, noting that letters of recommendation, and support for the. service have been received from Premier Mike Harris, the.
