Whitby' s Smith on bronze medal team Whitby's Tracy Smith was a member of the Chinguacousy team that surprisingly won a bronze Acme top sluggers Acme Mobile Wash captured the senior mite Sluggers division championship of the Whitby Girls' Softbail Association by defeating Mr. Transmission in a two-game final. After having flnished fourth in regular season play, Acme had te defeat ail three teams ahead of them in the standings during the playoff round before meeting undefeated Mir. Transmission in the 1Énal. As they had done throughout the playoffs, Acme rode the strong pitching of Lori Gobby, Mlissa Annis and Amanda Handscomb, and got timely hitting te defeat Mr. Transmission 9-6 and 13-7 te, win the championship. Other members of the team are Ashley Bedford, Jaclyn Beare, Amy Fallis, Kristin Hawe, Karen McAuley, Heather MéArdy, Amanda Mlilburn, Ashley Parxy and Amy Terminesi. Smith, a Henry Street High School graduate, is currently in her sixth of eight years of studies at the University of Guelph to become a veterinarian. She is on the dean's list for her high academic performance. They won the house league tournament, league championship and flnished first i the playoffs. In the championsip game, Guardian won 6-2 over Whitby Vick Insurance prevailed in the Whitby miner basebail miner mosquito playoffa, fighting off a determined Legal Beagles team for the championship trophy. The double-knockout tournament resulted in a number of upsets and surprises i the very competitive 14-team division. Vick, fifth in the regular season, faced Legal Beagles, seventh in regular season in a battle cf undefeated playoff teams with Vick winning the first encounter. Légal Beagles battled back in their next game against Starr Avenue Burger te qualify for the championship match-up. In the second encounter of the two teama, Beagles, under coaches Paul McNeil and Larry Duckworth, won 11-9 over Vick te set up a auddendeath rematch., The championship was dedided on Aug. 23 in a match that was close for moot cf the game until Vick puiled away at the end te win 9-4 for coaches Bill Chapman and Ron Brough. Vick members are Robert Chapman, Sterling Brough, Emmanuel McGregor, Kyle Fenn, Michael Swarz, Adama McLeod, Audio who had beaten Guardian earlier ini the seriez. Anissa Pacheson, 16, of Courtice, Canadian and Ontario junior welterweight girls' champion, will meet Ontario lightweight silver medallist Debbie Richards of the Ail Nations club near Liondon, Ont. Pacheson, fighting at 132 pounds, knocked out a Cabbagetown boxer i her most recent bout. Steve Bolieki, 16, of Oshawa will face probably bis toughest opponent yet when he does battis with John Aranoysi, 17, of McGory's Boxing Club of Hamilton.. Aranoys iis a seasoned figliter despite bis young age. Bolisi, ini the junior middleweight (156-pound) class, avenged his only defeat with a knockout recently. Ail of Boliski's seven wins have been by knockout. Several other bouts make up the show. Novices WÎi silver The Witby novice girls' softbal team won the silver medal in the league playoffs. Hawks lost 12-11 and 6-2 to Newmarket's B team in the finals. Hawks began *the playoff weekend with a 6-0 win over Markham II as Tanya Gorecki struck out eight and got great defence from her teammates. Hawks then defeated Newmarket B 6-2 and Cobourg 13-11. The Cobourg game was a wild affair as Hawks were losing 6-2 i the sixth inning but came back to, tie the game 6-6 by the seventh inming.
