The changee came after the Oshawa Symphony Orchestra 1994-95 concert series, which had produced, $15,000 in debta, wae ahruptly stopped and the remaining three concerts canceled ta avoid further debts. That prompted a review of ail aspects of the organization in an attempt te salvage what had become a popular form of entertainment for many in the area. The name je now the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra, te reflect that the series je not juet Oshawa-based and for Oshawa residents. Ini fact, of the four concerts that anake up the 1995-96 season, one je ini Bowmanville - a firet for the organization - and one of the concerts in the 1996-97 season wil be in Whitby. The 18-member board that oversees the eeries lias seven new members, or direetors, including some from Whitby - Luciana Jovanovic, ini senior management at EDS Canada; Don Crossley, recently retired as sales manager for Honeywell; iàse Kozlinki, of the south Oshawa community development health centre; renowned flautiet Pandora Bryce. "If wehadn't reorganized, we would.n't be here teday," says executive director Bob Johnston. "We realized we'd been mucli too isolatèd for too long," he says of the board'e efforts ta go outaide Oshawa boundaries for both concerts and input on how ta modify the program. The public was asked te help choose a new logo for the orchestra, and the public will b. asked te choose a new conductor for the 1996-97 season. There were 33 applicants - some from eastern Europe - for the conductor's position vacated last season by Winston Webber.
