Durham Region. The first ever support centre for cancer patienteais scheduled te open thie month. Hearth Place IS an establishment based on the Toronto Wellspring model that Sylvia Blomme, a breast cancer .survivor and facilitator of the Oshawa program, describes as "sorne great help so far. They (the organizers from Weilspring) are giving us facilitator training, different ideas." Both programs are for ail types of cancer patients and the Wellspring model is "very well used by the Toronto community." Blomme relays that "Carloyn Alexander and I and three other women started breast cancer support groups, one- a month. There were more cails, more nee.ded help for varying types 6f cancer such as lung cancer and gynecological cancer. There was no place for these women te go, Toronto was too far." Alexander, a cancer victim who died on July 1, had the initiative and idea te. start something similar te Wellspring ini Durham. Much public support fo Carolyn's husband Bob who is a lawyer in the area, breast cancer patiente witli a mission to get the program ru ng a YWCA mnember, and members of the Oshawa 1General ,Hospital Foundation have greatly aided witli the structuring of the program, says Blomme. Yoga, art therapy that encourages- people te express themséelves Ilirougli art, and laugliter therapy using a cart of books and videos te add humour te the lives 'of the cancer patients, will be a part of the program. Sessions on the effect of cancer on the family, a session on additional treatments other than chemotherapy, and a guest speaker on breast cancer will be provided by the group. There is not yet a location for the program but organizers"would like té be close te, the future cancer centre at the Oshawa hospital. The organization lias raised about $45,000, helped -by an autumn art show in Whitby, Survwain Soweh of a Voioe, and a fashion show sponsored by Garbo's which raised about $3,000. The Osliawa Little Theatre is donating the profits of the performance of Rumora on Feb. 7 to tlie organization. A ski day is being lield by lawyers' from Osliawa on Feb. 14, with all proceeds going to the Heartli'Place trust fund. Proceeds from the theatre group's Feb. 7 production of the Neil Simion comedy, Rumors, will be doniated to Hearth Place, a cancer support facility planned for opening in 1996. A benefit p9eormance of Rumors will be presented at 8 p.n., Feb. 7, at the Oshawa Little Theatre on Russett Avenue in Oshiawa.
