Whtby Free Press, Wednesday, March 27, 1996 ,Page Il Nursing managers laid off at general hospital ByMike Kowalski Some Whitby General Hospital nurses are domg double-duty as a result of Ontario government fundingcutbacks. Hospital vice-president Marc Kealey confirmed Friday that "three or four» night shift nurs- mg managers were laid off. The layoffs, prompted by a $462,300 cut to the hospital's 1996-97 budget, will have no impact on patient care, Kealey stressed. "Nurses today are expected to take on broader responsibilities for patients," Kealey explained, thereby negating the need for additional support from manage- ment. "As a consequence, we will roll back three or four senior night shift managers...their jobs are gone,»he said. Should a matter requiring management's attention arise, five senior administrative per- sonnel, including Kealey will be available on a rotating basis to respondto problemi. If there is an issue, we're only a phone cali awa ahnsaid. Kealey saaid W&itby Goneral officials received their budget guidelines from the Ministry of Health last week and the layofs were one method of coping with the four per cent cutback. (Last rthe hospital recei- ved sli y more than $11.5 million om the province.) Kealey could not indicate if additional layoffs are planned, but he did say officials hope it can be avoided once details of a special fund for hospitals outside Metro Toronto are known. Last month, Health Minister Jim Wilson announced that $25 million of the government's $365- million reduction in transferrgay- mente will be "reinvested in areas of high population growth such as Durham Heg*on. Hospitals in Durham, York Peel and Halton r ons will be able to draw from t e fund, but eligibility criteria has yet to be dotermined. "We try to gear it to have the least effect on patient services," he said, addin that changes have been ma eto such non- patient services as the hospital's recycling operation, communica- tions network and lighting sys- tom.
