The Oshawa Turul under-16 boys' soccer teamkicéked off the 1996 season on a positive note by winning their firet league game and reachlng the finals in the Unionville-Milliken soccer tournament. The team consiste of a coalition of last season's Turul teain and seven Whitby Raiders. Gerry Rainey, who coached Raiders in the past four years, has joined forces with Oshawa coach Mark Dodsley te develop Durham players and croate a competitive Turul team in the Central Soccer League. Turul edged Vaughan 2-1 in thefr first league game. Andrew Sesti defiected a perfect cross by Dan Henry, and Mike Schleiffer provided the winning goal as he connecte,- on a corner klck by Henry. In the Unionvâlbe-Miliken soccer tournament, in the absence of their regular keeper Jo. Hlaars, Paul Hogarth and Schleiffer each shared the job of goaltending in the first three games. With two wins and a tie in the preliminary round, they advanced te the semi-finals against North York Jets. Paul Lyttle gave Oshawa a .,,,o-goal lead at half Urne and returning keeper Ryan S.11 dove te prevent a goal on a penalty shot. Yet Jets fought back I lb DU HA with two goals in the second haîf te tde the game with only seconds remalming. Turul eventually won on penalty shots Dy Sesti and Jerr Zielinski. With Henry and Schleiffer absent and with several inuries, Turul lost te Unionville ln the final game., Other team members include sweeper James -West-Bentley, Kolobutin and forwards Brad defencemen Stefan Nicota. Many of the tep socer clubs in Ontario were represented at the teurnament. .Wolves, coached by Steve Hamnill, opened with a 4-1 win over Glen Shields, goals by Antonio Scala, Danny Mattin, Evin Pope and Marg Engebage. Whitby was out-passed by the beague-leading Woodbridge team in the second game, resulting in a 3-0 bs. However, Whiutby stili managed fto make it inte the semi- finals on point average. A teugh Erin Mlles team'scored the first goal on a penalty ick. Whitbkys striker Engelage quicly tied the game by converting a pasa from Scala and fielder Scott McDavid headed Whitby's second goal, and the final goal came from defender Eric, Rodrigues who converted a pass from Ros Hamili inte a well deserved goal. Erin Milîs came back ýwith two unanswered goals te tie the gaine up and force overtime. Penalty shots finally decided the game in Erin Mils' favour. Haiî was pleaÉed with the team'si performance as haîf of the team members are- new this year.
