The ReinCARnate vehicle recycling program now offers motoristes a convenient opportunity to recycle their old vehicles and get a tax break too. "We see derelict cars in -rural fields and urban driveways< but we don't realize the problems they are creating," says Martin Collier, coordinator of RCO's new program. "Only 35 per cent of ail cars taken off Ontario roads are properly dismantled, reused or recycled. As a result, corroded steel, decaymng rubber and 20 litres ofoperating fluidâ per car are contaminating the environment i which they are stored." Approrimately 75 per cent of an automobiles content by weight can be reused or recycled. Many wo rking automotive components are refurbîshed and sold back te the public, auto garages, or repair' shops at a much more economical price than the corresponding new part. Operating fluids are easily re-refined iwbile other materialsý can be recycled into new products such as lawnmowers, backpacks,- rubber boots and insulation. Endorsed by the Ontario Mlnistry of Environment and Energy and co-sponsored by the Canadian Petroleum Products Institutes, Safety-Kleen 'Canada, and the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association (QARA), the ReinCARnate program encourages motorists to reduce environment contamination associated with their old cars. By donating a vehicle (working or flot) te the ReinCAR nate program, motorists will ensure that automobiles are properly dismantled by a member of the QARA located i their area. After the, vehicle has been tewed away free of charge, the donor will receive, within a two-week period, its value issued by the RCO in the form; of' a charitable tax receipt. Proceeds from the sale of the donated vehicle will support ongoing RCO waste reduction' efforts. The RCO.is a registered non-profit charity representing busines, governinent,ý community groups and individuals, and provides'a wide range of environmental progra n' and services to help achieve a more sustainable future. Cail 1-888-CAIR DIED when your car lias reached the end of its, first life., Jobs'are being created, By AUezShephord 1 find it odd that somne people argu e there, are no more jobs now than there were three years ago., This simply isn't true.- Over 600,000 net-new jobs were created sine 1993. Here in Durham the economy created 11,000 net-new jobs. When X Bay % net,' I mean* net of job losses. I don't believe goverament creates'jobs. They cr eate the environinent where business - and i turn jobs- can flourish. But goveraments, in and of themnselves, are poor job creators. T he federal government has attacked the deficit through reduced spending. It has held the lime ontax increses rsligh n fh lowest interest rates ini the western world, lower even than the U.S. This has created business formation which lias created jobs. People don't believe thiis is happening, first because of what is known as labour force participation. This means that while new jobs are being created those who have, long gziven up the search for work start loonking again., In the area of intern--atio-nal -trade I amn working on getting a trade agreement between Peru, and Canada signed which will see truck bodies and other components produced here ii'i Durham 'sent te that countrY. This will increase the empîcyment level and -have otheir Positive impacta. on the local economy. Jobs are being created nationaUly and right here i Durham.
