-.~EBROOKLI N} - Hel ping our neighbours BySteve Leîhy Remember the severe flooding during the smmer of 1993? The U.S. midwest was badly bit at that Urne when the Mfississippi and other rivers overflowed their ba.nks. Many Brooklin farmers came te, the rescue ofbmlsouri farmers who found themeelves without any hay. Seven tractor-trailers loaded with Brooklin hay soon found its way te, many grateful Mfiosouri farmers. It was a generous effort and oe worth remembering. With last weehs flood waters devastating amail towns in Quebec's Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region, local residents are once again responcling te those in need. A depot lias been set up at Burns Church in Ashburn te collect foodatuifs and clotbing. According te, the news reports, more'than 12,000 people i the Saguenay region were evacuated and hundreds and homes were destroyed by the raging floodwaters. The people there have lost al cf their possessions, s0 there is a desperate need for ordinary items sucli as .ummerifall clothing that they can take riglit out of a bag and use. That means the clothes must be dlean and undamaged. Clothing is needed for adulte, chldren and babies. Also needed are dry and canned foode,ý bottled water and juices. Baby food and diapers are required riglit away. And for those whose homes have been hard ht, kitchenware and good useable furniture will aiso be accepted at Burns Churcli, 765 Myrtle Rd. W. Local volunteers will colleot and sort the - natezial at the churcli today until Saturday Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. te, 8 p.m. They will need' help with this,se offer a couple cf hours cf your trne if you can. The people suffering through this disaster need f material quickly and a Misisauga courier company lias volunteered te sbip everything collected at Burns te Quebec as moon as possible. COMMUNITY SCHOOL? Local residents met with Town officiais iast week te find eut what was required te, turn Meadowcrest Public School ite a community use faeiity. This appears te be the best way te keep the doors of the echool open for the many evening and weekend programs that have run in the facilities over the years. Cutbacks at the board cf education would have meant that the scheol would*net have been'avaMilable te, anyone a.fter 8 p.m. or on weekends. AÂbig part cf the conimunity.use achool is the formation cf a volunteer board te, take charge of what programns will use the school and when. T here is aise a requirement for a pregram superviser whe, will be responsibie for preper use of the facilities and to unlock and lock the deers fer user groupa. To get things started ini Urne for fail, an interim board lias te be formed and soon, otherwise this opportunity, may paso. Later this year a formai. board will be elected from among members cf the community. Obviously if ne one helpe eut on the board, then there will be ne facilities te use ini Breoklin after 8 p.m. or on weekends. Contact Soinja Graham at 655-4079 te Iid eut more or to, volunteer. Whitby has three -communIty- use achois and they offer an incredfible array cf programas. This could well ho a huge bocet fer everyone in our community. OPTBMT Brooklins busy Optimist Club lias once again 'erganized a summer career placement program that enabled eight students te be placed in a real job for seven ýieéks this summer. The difficulties in gettîng a summer job these days are well known and yet every student is at bons ends without something te. do during the summer.
