Page 14, Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, September 4, 1996 -.~fBROOLN - Littié school that grew By Steve Leaby St. Leo School is literally a four-room schoolhouse. Split grades were. the norm and students moved into hlgh school at the rate of seven or eight or maybe 10 a year. Fielýding sports teams sometimes required getting kIda from three or four different grades te make up a team - it was difficuit to, put together boys' and girls' senior and Junior teams when there were only 85 children from junior kcindergarten te Grade 8. There were .both disadvantages and advantages in belng small. Most former St. Leo students seem te think being sinaller was better. But this week, with an enrolment of 205 students and six portables te house them, St. Leo is on its way to becoming a "medium- size", prîmary school. - Juet five or six years ago, the school held lese than 100 students. And in the previous 20-odd years the numbers were lower still but hadn't varied much. Now St. Leo appears -te be on an exponential growth curb and will be hard-pressed te keep the ingredients that made being a student there a special experience. Not far down the line (not too far, hopefiilly), there will be a new school building. Wt won' t b. an old four-room school house. It will be new, modemn and maybe even have a gymn. Change bringe, both disadvantages and advantages, '. but _,people determine 'what thet proportions will be.1 BROOKLIN SCOUTS Brooklin Scouting's annual hotdog barbecue- and regi stration will take place in the iÇnsmen park shelter (behind the library) at 6 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 9.
