'This was achieved by Providing care units that incorporated our elient's wishes to realize the autonomy they had in the old facility," says Bergstrom,WMHÇ planning coordinator. The new hospital creates a village-like environment incorporating the "A, B, C" spaces - activity and access, beds and private spaces and control and clhnical. areas, that are fundamental to psychiatrie planning. Construction of the building cost about $90 million and the total jproject cost was $133 million. Not only is the hospital the largest construction projeet in Durham in recent years, it also boast8 the largest installation of a zinc roof in the world. Zinc was chosen because it is a very durable roofing material and the hospital roof has an expeeted lifespan of 100 years. Two <streets» link the buildings 15 patient care units (PCUs). Each of the units is self-containe1 and the streets are designed to optimize the feeling of a emnaîl town or village. Light wells are used throughout the building to maimize the levels of natural light. Art works have been plaeed throughout the facility to improve the esthetics of the building and also act as 'landmarks' along the 1,200-foot (365-metre) street. Energy consumption in the building will be reduced by 20 per cent because of the daylight; conservation measures. The design of the building ensures that maxidmum advantage is taken of the site's location on the shores of Lake Ontario. There are views of the lake and- surrounding landscape from al areas of the building. The building was designed by a consortium of three architecture firms, Crang & Boake, Cannon, and Moffat Kinoshita Architects. "There needed to be a sense of orientation in the building for the patients, visitors and staff;" says Gordon Robinson, design manager for the joint venture team. Inside the PCUs carpeting and soft furnishinga were used to help create a more muted acoustîc that is more condueive to a residential atmosphere. Ail of the materials and fabrica that were used in the building were tested in the hospital's current facilities for durability and maintenance. Newcombe also says that while a standard design was maintained throughout the comple;, the needs of partieular patients were taken into consideration for individual units. Ini the geriatries unit,' for instance, harsh colour eontrasts that could ereate the illusion of a step were avoided in the flooring. "This was a wonderful projeet from beginning to end," says Newcombe.
