Cloud Nineworth the 'rsk By George Kaufman Cloud ine ie just the sort of play' that makes the Durham Shoestring Players a uniquely valuable theatre group in ltis area. No other community theatre troupe around would conader such a rlisky play, and with good reason. Cloud Nine ile mature dramna, definitely just for aduits flot easily offended by frank language, and baw*dy situations. With that qualification, it ie also an often extremely entertajnng play, in which Playwright Caryl Churchill mnakes us laugh, and then immediately wonder why we find such serjous matters funnY. Much of the humour is Of 'the if-we-dclint-laugh.. weyd-cry variety. mueh on cliched stereotypes. The strong- cast, though, manages to walk the tirhtwie, balaneing between hroadI frivolity and social ct;zment. This is a black eomedy that defly bends not only gender, but also -race and age, often te startling effect. Direetor Arlene Stinchcornbe uses her talented actors effciently, as ail seven cast members take on multiple roles. Reliable veterans Ken Bond and Jeif Foote are 'wonderfully outrageous, and Mao Rodgers is- delightfufly impressive switching gears tough her three challenging roles. Brad Carson, Georgina Spencer', Chris Cornish and Becky Engel-Abralaso complete the capable, energetic cast. 1' To go inte the plot would not only spoil Your encyment,. but. would be impossible.
