On any one of those Saturday mornlngs you'll ind a 69-year-old grandfather and a 21-year-old chasing a bouncing football 'in a howling rainstorm. Or a father and hies 24-year-old son stfll piaying catch. Or, for at least the 250th tfinq, two guys going head to head with as mucli guato, and intensity as the firat time, aibeit at a littie slower pace. Ail are members of the Whitby Men's Football League, oelebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The beague got its start in 1972 when Whitby residents Bob Rideil and Jack Thompson grew tired of travelling ail the way to Toronto to get their touch football fix. They put a notice on cable TV and invited anyone who might be interested playing touch football to a meeting in the old town hall. More than 80 guys showed up and the Whitby Men's Touch Football League was born. Since one of the purposes of league is to help people, especially newcomers, to get to know each other, teame were organized based on street location in the early years. Many players have said that they've met more people in their firet 10 'weeks of football than in ail the years they'd iived in town. That's still true today, even thougli the teame are now selected through a general draft to ensure the league is balanced. Some of the friendships made in 1972 remain to this day. In fact, two of the original players, Adam Chapman and Tom Fitzsinmons, are stili playing --and some say they're finally getting the hang of the game. Another original, Barry Album, was foroed to retire for health reasons two seasons ago. Players say one of the keys to the league's success is the.dedication of the volunteers who organize and manage the league. Another key is the league's officials, or rather the lack of them. Each player is required to referee at least one game . So no one gets too upset when a referee misses a oeil, knowing they'll hold the whistle the next game. The continuing support of Whitby's parks and recreation department abong with the Durham Board of Education lias also been crucial to the sucoess of league. And players are delighted with the new football fields at Henry Street Hligh School. The league was happy to make a financiai contribution to assist the reconstruction. If's estimated that more than 1,000 guys have played in the league in its 25-year history. Many former tearmates have lost contact with each other over the years. To remedy that, and to celebrate its 25th year, the league is holding a dinner-dance on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Brock Street North in downtown Whit by. Ail former playere and frienda of the league are invited. Cocktails are at 7 p.m., with a home- cooked prime rib dinner served at 8 p.m. Live entertainment will be provided by Whitby's George Olliver. Pictures, memorabilia and artifacts - some living - wlll be on dlsplay.
