Last Friday, student council beld the firat Gong Show during which students performed their faveurite song or act. Students and staff were eliminated if their act was tee long, borlng orjust plan bad. Students were graced with the talents cf M&. Kroylk andbis accordion, Satveer Gi and bis guitar, as well as many other brave contestants. Firat prize, a five-pound chocolate bar, went te Meghan Parnell and Jerrad' Zbelak;,secnd prize, free what is learned in the classrom with what is practised at home. Corporato sponsors provide teachers with the training and support materials to deliver the curriculum te their students. Studenta are enceuraged te bring in any non-perishable food items as well as used or new clothing, new or used games and teys, or anything that they can spare te help families who are leàs fortunate. The Christmas break can provide an opportunity for tudente to get a head start on ezam study. Many students feel the pressures of exams and an increase in their stress level and aniety. However, a steady, planned approach to exam preparation ie the surest way' to success and reduced stress. Most high schools in Whitby have some resource materials available for students to assist 'them in preparing for their exams. At Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School,' the guidance department has developed a bookiet, An Invitation To Sucoeaa:A Guidle to Good Work and Study Habite. The folowing are some tips for studying English and math. Studying English: 1) Begin to .study early by re-reading the texts, especially work read early in the term. 2) Review ail notes. 3) Make lists of characters and explain how each character fits into and affects the plot. Do character sketches of major characters. List details of setting. List events cf the plot. 4) Memorize definitions of major literary terms. 5) Practice answering an essay question, noting thesis statement, outlining, editing. Studying mathematica: 1) Go through your test and do one question of each type that you have already done. 2) After you finish each question, check your solution aganst the corrected solution ini your exercise book. 3) If you have a difficulty, make note cf it. When you have tried one question cf each type you have studied, you will have a list cf your difficulties. Seek help with these difficulties. Students who begin early, develop a study plan and stick to it will not only do wefl on their exams but reduce their stress level as well.
