Mary Wood, founder of the former Innushare Project that helped support residents of Davis Inlet, Labrador, grew up in New Zealand. Her. moat memorable Christmas was, she feels, a sad one. "W. had glass doors leading into the living room," Wood recalse. "My father always used to, keep the. doors locked until after breakfast. "So, ail seven of us children would be staring through these glss doors at ail the. Christmas goodies that we couldn't have until after breakfast and church." Ted Wood, a mystery writer, grew up in England. His most memorable Christmas was in 1938, when he and bis family were living in a slum ares. in London. "My dad was the only guy on the street with a job," Wood remembers. It was Christmas eve, and the Salvation Army came around with ladie's stockings filled with Christmas goodies for everyone on the street. 7They knocked on eveiyone's door, asked how many children they had and pushed that many stockings9 through the door. "My father had a job so we had presents and didn't need the extra gifts. "Everyone else on tih. street did, but the. Saivation Army gave the stockings te us anyways." This year, the. Woods wil be spending Christmas with their famiiy. "It's ail about the children," says Mfary. "For Ted and nme, Christmas realiy happens in September, wh.n we do the big shipm.nt for Davis Inlet. "It's a hard job, collecting toys and clotiies. "By the. time Christmas comes axound, w. don't have a lot of enthusiasm left. "Tii. Innushare project is our Christmas effort, the. hard work is worth it. "After ail the most important part of Christmas le sharing."
