WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1980, PAGE 15 Whitby girls win ringette tournament By JOANNE ANDERSON Free Press Staff An excellent team effort and superior netminding led the Whitby Lasco Steel Belles to a win in the belle division of the Oshawa ringette house league tour- nament held at Harmon Park on Friday. Whitby played five games in the tournament winning all of them easily. In their first game Whitby January 1st signalled the end of another year and another decade, what did Whitby do this past year and what is it doing in the year 1980? In the past year the Whit- by Senior Citizens Activity Centre sent some of the senior citizens to Florida for defeated Oshawa by a score of 8 to5. Glenda Roberts and Marlene Brown were the games top scorers with 3 goals and 1 assist each. Debbie Fice hit for the remaining 2 goals. Diana Noble contributed 2 assists while Diane Pettis, Debbie Taylor, Michelle Callen and Karen Laing each hit for 1 assist. With only a half hour bet- a vacation while others travelled to New York. The centre expects an ad- ditional 125 members in the new year to join in the fun at the centre. It is the aim of the activity centre to increase the num- ber of pot-luck suppers in the ween games Whitby proceeded to mop up the rink with the Port Perry Team. Diane Pettis hit for five goals and 1 assist followed by Marlene Brown with 4 goals. Debbie Fice added a pair of goals and a pair of assists while Diana Noble and Glenda Roberts con- tributed 2 assists and Michelle Callen received 1. The final score was Whit- next year as well as in- creasing the physical fitness program. Marlene Brown notched 3 goals and 1 assist followed by Glenda Roberts with 2 goals and 1 assist. Debbie Fice also scored 1 goal. Terry Mullen, Karen Laing and Diane Pettis each contributed i assist. Local activities in 1980 The YMCA is offering a number of new activities in the uipcoming year such as contact lacrosse. Also being offered in the new year are Royal Conser- vatory of Music piano lessons, and jazzer disco which will promote fun with jazz, dance, music and couple dancing for grades 5 & 6. A coursý on striding and waxing skills for beginner and advanced cross-country skiers will be offered begin- ning January 19, 1980. Physical programs will also include Acrobatic gym- nastics, aquatics, badmin- ton, tennis, canoeing, gym- nastics, weight control, floor hockey and judo and karate. The Whitby chapter of the One Parent Families Association of Canada will begin meeting every Mon- day at 8:30 p.m., the meetings wilil be held in the Centennial Building on Cen- tre St. commencing January 7, 1980. Receiving assists were Roberts, Brown, Diane Pet- tis and Terry Mullen. In the championship gaine Whitby trounced Oshawa by a score of 10 to 4 to finish the tournament undefeated. Glenda Roberts and Deb- bie Fice each contributed 4 goals and 1 assist. Marlene Brown and Diane Pettis ad- ded the remaining goals with assists going, to Brown, Pettis, Callen and noble. Linda Kingston's goalten- ding was outstanding throughout the entire day although she had only a hlf hour between games to rest. In their first game in the junior league tournament the Whitby junior ringette team defeated Oshawa No. 2 9 to 5. Scoring for Whitby were Connie Hammers with 7 goals and Susan Pipher with 2 goals. Adding assists were Heather Robertson, Shelly Garland, Debra War- mington, Lisa Bolduc and Susan Crossan. Whitby was defeated by port Perry juniors in their second gaine. Scoring for Whitby were Susan Pipher with 2 goals and Connie Hamers and Susan Crossan with 1 goal each. Debra Warmington and Lori Glaspell each con- tributed i assist. The final score was Whit- by 4, Port Perry 7. Whitby juniors played Oshawa No. 3 in the chan- pionship game but was defeated by a score of 7 to 4. Scoring for Whitby were Heather Robertson and Connie Hamers with 2 goals each. Shelly Garland and Kim Garland each hit for 1 assist. The juniors will see their next action on January 5 at the Iroquois arena. The Education Relations Commission today announ- ced the appointment of Professor Eugene Deszca as a person to assist the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board and its teachers in their negotiations. Professor Deszca received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Western On- tario. He teaches at York University in Toronto. Professor Deszca has previously assisted in negotiations between the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Northum- berland and Newcastle, and the Hastings-Prince Edward County Roman .
