This information was announced recently by The Equitable [Le Insurance Comipany of Canada, believed to be the first Canaclian-owned mutual company to offer a specialized premniumn structure for non-sinokers. Studies by a major life insurer in the United States con- ducted over a fifteen year period show a subst.antîally higher ratio of smokers' to non-smokers' mortality rates. Equitable's entry into this market segment was prom- pted by the dramatie conclusions of the U.S. study as well as other supportive data available from Canadian, British and U.S. sources, said company president T.R. Suttie. "Non-smokers of cigarettes represent a growing percen- tage of our Canadian population. Their consideration for good health and resultant longer life should be recognized. " A review of applications for insurance being received by Equitable Life has shown that over 50 per cent of the ap- plicants are non-smokers. The first in a series of contracts to be offered at a discounted rate for non-smokers is based on a whole life, non-participating policy.
