Those areas still requiring a chair-person are: Florence Heard , St. Theresa's, Whitby Sr., Otter Creek, Fairman, St. 'John's, Dr. R. Thornton, St. Paul's, and Sinclair. This last area is of par- ticular concern because whereas all the other areas have strong supportive com- mittees that will carry on, the Dr. R. Thornton committee members have been steadily shrinking in number and will possible disband when Mrs. J. Sobanski steps down as area chair-person. This will be a great loss to that area because Block Parent services such as school phoning for absentee children will also discontinue. In the three-and-a-half years that Block Parents have been present in Whitby, we have grown to include 1214 police-approved families, with yet another nine families still being processed. Many of the serving committee members date back to the original group that brought Block Parents in- to Whitby. Please consider getting a little more involved in this very worthwhile group, either to learn your Area Chairperson's duties, or to serve on your area committee so that more experienced members may feel free to assume the job of Chairper- son. In October of 1975, they held their first Community dance. The affair proved so suc- cessful, that community members requested we organize a dance once a month. After careful deliberation, it was decided that Semi annually would be sufficient. Out 10th Capers Ball promises many surprises. Tickets are $9.00 a couple, and can be obtained from any member of the executive. A special donation to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Association will be made at the dance. Association will hold a dance at the Cen- tennial Building on Saturday, the 9th of February. Tickets are $10.00 per couple, lunch and refreshments will be available. Call Mildred Henstock at 638-3421 for tickets. K-MART PLAZA EXPANSION Last Monday evening, representatives from Devan En- terprises attended the Administrative Committee Meeting. They requested a zoning amendment to allow an expansion to the plaza and erect a steak and burger sit-down restaurant. The addition would probably consist of 12 to 14 additional shops and a restaurant on the corner of Ken- dalwood and Dundas Street. They also suggested an additional outlet onto Ken- dalwood Road, south of Hunter Street and directly facing the front entrance of the Sear's residence. This outlet proved a little difficult for the committee members as well as the residents in attendance. It was suggested that future outlets be directed off Nicol Anvenue. The developer, however, did not take too kindly to the suggestion. The K-Mart fence was also a point of contention. The fen- ce was partially removed last October with the promise that a new one would be installed. We were informed by the developer that the neighbourhood children destroyed the fence, but that he was willing to have a new fence erected. Oh well the fence would be safer. The developer also left us in much doubt about his intentions for the Stone Cairn. Although the town specifically stated the Cairn remain as is, the developer suggested that it be d smantled and the stone and plaque be incorporated into the front entrance of the restaurant. The plan will appear, once again before the Administrative Committee to resolve the problem areas. GARRARD ROAD SIDEWALKS The 1980 budget for the Town of Whitby contains an estimate for a sidewalk to be constructed on the west side of Garrard Road from Rossland Road, approximately half the distance to Dundas Street, with the estimated cost $35,000.00. Half of the money to be raised from the General Budget and half from development levies. With luck, this may take place in 1980. So far, the residents, who must walk along Garrard, have been fortunate. Old Man Winter has been kind this year. No snow banks to crawl over as yet.
