Last week, about 40 residents of Brooklin were disappointed when they showed up at the regular meeting of the Whitby Town Council expecting a public debAte on this, ever sen- sitive, issue. They were inspired to at- tend the meeting because of an unsigned letter that had been delivered to their dooes urging themn to attend. The letter, also sent to Whitby Mayor Jim Gar- tshore said, "in spite of the development pressures, Brooklin development is not a fait accompli. Join us at the Monday meeting. It is still our village; help us keep it that way. " Most of the residents left the meeting without having had a chance to have their say although Jack Whiting, a member of the Brooklin Ratepayers Association, told council in a deputation that the development of the hamilet is long overdue. Whiting attacked those who circulated the unsigned letter as "people who do not have the courage to identify themselves and urged coun- cil to niove quickly to stop, what he refered to as, the "stagnation" of Brooklin. He told council that the population of Brooklin has dropped about 1,600 because young people are moving away to areas where housing is more readily available. North Ward Councillor '.1 Bob Carson, who represents Brooklin thanked Whiting for "1coming and saying some of the things I have been trying to get acrSs to council and staff for five years.t Whiting was mistaken in making "inferences that we are waffling" on the issue, West Ward Councillor Joe Buigelli said. Carnival grant may lie upped The County Town Carnival cornmittee's grant may be increased by $1,500. At Monday night's meeting of the town's operations committee, a recommendation was passed that would see the grant increased from $3,5W0 to $5,000. The committee was originally given the $3,5S0 at the. budget committee meetings last week, however, their original request had been for $8,500. That represented a $1,000 increase over 1979's grant of $7,500. While the recomrnen- dation still has to receive council approval, carnival committee president Robin Lyon said, that he was pleased with the increase and that the committee would be happy to receive any increase funding. The operations committes made the recommendation after hearing a deputation frorn Lyon. This is an update on the story that appears on page three.
