In his speech to council, Carson criticized Oie Free Press for comparing the Carnival to Oie Brooklin Spring Fair in its editorial of last week. Carson called Oie com- parison "unfair". He said that Oie Brooklin Spring Fair was an agricultural event that only received grants totalling $900 from both Oie provincial and Oie federal governmfen- ts. Carson, a five year veteran of council and Brooklin businessman, agreed with the Free Press' editorial that Oie carnival was a '"wortbwhile project, " and Oiat "changes should be made" in Oie way Oie two- week event operates. He bas also served as a president 0f the Brooklin Spring Fair Board. Carson said that Oie fair "pays Oie going rate for the arena and oOier town facilities" and that it charges admission to the grounds and for most of Oie events such as Oie Fiddlers' Contest. Carson also introduced a motion that would see Oie grant to the County Town Carnival Committee reduced over Oie next Oiree years to Oie point where they received nothing. He said Oie move was necessary to make Oie committee "self-sufficient". 1111m asking Oie County Town Carnival Committee to get Oiemnselves in a stable financial position," he said. Carson's motion was defeated by a vote of coun- cil. Attersley said that be was opposed W Oie inreased grant because they sbould not be carrying sucb a large amount over from last year. According tW records available to council, Oie commnittee * ad a bank balance of $4,000 at the end of 1979. Attersley was also Oie mover of Oie original $3,5W0 grant during the budget discussions. Despite his position, At- tersley said that he had "la lot of confidence in Oie Coun- ty Town Carmival Commit- tee."t Support for the increased grant came from Regional Counilor Gerry Emm who said Oiat he would likeýto see Oie committee put on "someOiing better"' in this, Witby's 125Oi anniversary year. "I wouldn't like to see the committee financially strapped, " he said. West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli said Oiat Oie in- crease in Oie grant could be "precedent setting"I although he agreed Oiat "we shouldn't strap Oiem for money."1 "I don't see why Oie Coun- ty Town Carnival Commit- tee should be treated any différent from Oie otber community organizations,"1 he said. OOier organizations bave received a 20 per cent cut in Oieir grants and indications are that Oiey will continue to be cut by the same amount in Oie next few years. Carson also told council that, in bis opinion, the committee has "done nothing over Oie past four years to become self- sufficient." "We have Wo come down a little barder, " he said. West Ward Councillor Joe Drumm's major concern with Oie increase was that Oie budget was already Prepared and Oie move would mean a deficit before it was implernented. "We've struck a budget, let's stick with it,"11he said. - Couneil voted to increase the grant by 81,500 W $5000o despite Oie objections of some councillors. Basketb ail champions
