Phone 668-6111 The Free Press Building Voice of the County Town Michael Ian Burgess, Publisher- Managing Editor 131 Brock Street North, The only Whitby newspaper independently owned and operated by Whitby residents for Whitby residents. P.O. Box 206, Whitby. O0 The buses are most welcome Whitby has joined the ranks of civilized municipalities and Council is to be congratulated for introducing into the town a bus service. It has been a long time coming but the wait was weil worth it. The bus service is not perfect, but at least it is a step in the right direction and the residents of Whitby have a much needed service. It is not good enough to have the service, people must use it so that we can keep it. Perhaps in time, Council will see its way clear to providing the service through the evening and on Saturday, but that has yet to come. Council should not be blamed for taking this ap- parently cautious first step, they have never taken on this type of project and the first few months will be a learning experience for them. There is a comment that cannot go without rebuke. There are some people who have cricticized the service for not going to the Oshawa Shopping Cen- tre. Simply put, the idea is ridiculous. Why should the taxpayer (especially the commercial and in- dustrial taxpayer) foot the bill for some people to go to Oshawa Shopping Centre to spend their money. Local business pays the largest portion of taxes and they deserve support. If someone wants to go to the Oshawa Shopping Centre, they should pay their own way, not have their trip subsidized by the Whitby taxpayer. Besides which, if people want to go and spend their money in the Oshawa Centre, they cannot have much confidence in their own home town. If these people represent the majority of Whitby residents (and it is certainly believed that it is not) then the apparent death rattle of the downtown core is going to get louder and stronger. Whitby people should be using the Whitby bus service to support Whitby business, Whitby recreation and Whitby culture. Having a bus service will be a boon to a great many people, it will allow them the opportunity to get about and see their own town. Admittedly, parents may still be permanent, un- paid taxi-drivers in the evening but at least through the long, hot summer days they won't have to get the car out to drive their children to Whitby's recreation facilities. Thank -you Dear Sir: The Whitby Jaycet- tes would like to take this opportunity to ex- press our sincere thanks to you for ail the support you have given our organization. We have enjoyed working with you, the media, in the past year and look forward to continuing with this good working relation- ship in the future. Once again thank you. NHtttr B ~isit, % ftý j0 1 O Trnto, Humane Society does not seli animais for research Dear Sir: In an article published recently in the Globe and Mail, the public were seriously misled into believing that "animal shelters in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough are selling animais for use in research". Unfor- tunately, the article did not make clear that the "shelters" are, in fact, municipal public poun- ds operated not by the humane movement but by the municipalities concerned. I hope that this letter will be able to re-assure those persons in your area who might be concerned about the policy of the Society as far as the Society in your area is concerned. I reiterate, once again, that the policy of the Ontario Humane Society is not to release animais alive for the use in research. Yours sincerely, T.I. Hughes Executive Vice- President Ontario Humane Society Reader says bus service willfail Dear Sir: What is wrong with our councillors? After ail the voting and the editorials regarding a bus service, they offer us this apology for a service. Is it too much for them to understand that residents of Whit- by have all along been requesting transpor- tation as it was before, not just around Whitby but to enable us to get - doesn'tgo to OSC to the Oshawa Shop- ping Centre. Of course, we wili be told we can transfer to the GO bus, even that doesn't go near the Oshawa Cen- tre, and it is impossible for senior citizens to do all that bus hopping. So, do not be sur- prised if the new public transport fails, the time schedule alone is too ridiculous for com- ment. Name and address withheld by request EDITOR'S NOTE: The GO Bus does indeed pass the Oshawa Shopping Centre, but then again the arguement could always be raised that the Town of Whitby should not provide a bus service into anotheri its own pense. municipality at taxpayers ex- Surely local residents cannot have much confidence in their home town if they desire to spend their money elsewhere...af- ter all the bulk of the costs of operating this municipality is paid by the businesses within this town. Hence, it's only good sense to patronize the Whitby businesses who are in fact subsidizing the residential taxes. *Robin Lyon K argo ThOflPSOl'
