APRIL 16, 1980, PAGE 5 0MB approval needed first..., Bus William IL WaJksce Clerk -Administrator may get o By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff It would appear as though the recently approved town run bus service will flot get on the road until June 1. TIiat is two months after the original tender start up date of April 1. The reason for the delay is that the project requires On- tario Municipal Board ap- proval under bath the On- tario Municipal Act and the Municipal Franchise Act. During the 1980 budget discussions, Whitby Town Council awarded the first three year contract to Char- ierways Ltd, who ran the town's previously in-town service until last December when the inter-city routes were taken over by GO 'Transit. The total cost of operating the service to the town will be somewhere in the neigh- bourhood of $100,000 with the balance of the operating ex- r penses coming from fares and from grants from the provincial government. In a written statement, * Whitby clerk-administrator Bill Wallace said, "The cost of operating the system will be assessed against the property owners lying south of Rossland, from the Whit- by-Oshawa boundary on the east and on the west, the ur- banized area generally lying within Lynde Creek in- nthe ro ad June i cluding the highrise apar- tments at White Oaks Court. -The proposed bus system will provide regular service between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on an hourly basis, with peak haîf hour service between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and betweer 3:30 p.m. and 5p.m. daily. "The service will be provided Monday to Friday." Wallace said that no ob- jections had heen received at press time to the bus ser- vice adding that the 0MB will not hold a hearing on the matter unless it feels one is necessary. He said that such a decision would be based on the "ladequacy of any objec- tions" that the 0MB may receive. Whitby's most senior civil servant said that the routes have already been decided upon adding that they "will be refined as we go along. " The routes will be announ- ceci when final 0MB ap- proval is given. "As the town nears the time for implementation of the system, additional in- formation will be provided such as the bus routing, con- nections and bus stops," Wallace said.
