Dear Sir: As a resident of Whitby for the past 13 years and being present at the tîme the J.O. Ruddy Hospital was openied My feelings are strong agalnst the proposai to use the hospitai as a base for redevelopment of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. First, the citizens of Whitby worked hard to support the new hospitai whlch was feit necessary 10 years ago, and now with the rapldf growth of Whitby It is ridiculous to suggest It is not even more necessary today. We feel positively that a town of this size needs a hospital. Far f rom cutting its ser- vices back, they should be increased. Why was It deemed necessary not to use the ob- stetrical unit In the first place. However, since that decision was made and val uable space wasted, the option of re-opening it for chronic care patients ls an excellent one If It will keep the current operations Intact. An Increase in staff rather than a reduction wouid provide added em- ployment. A chronlc care unit seems to be very much needed In view of un- suitable facilities at Falrview Lodge. Also, havlng a separate floor for chronic care patien- ts would make for bet- ter or more comfortable facilities for regular patients. The fact that the location of the hospitai must be convenient for local doctors is Impor- tant, as its easy access for relatives of local patients. The visits of relatives and friends can play an Important role in patient recovery, especially If the nature of the illness necessitates a lengthy stay (as 1 can per- sonal ly af firmn). That the hospital may not be equlpped to handie every medical problem is no doubt true, but then neither ls any hospital ln a town of this size.
