Tis summer the Whitby Yacht Club *(WYC) wilI be glvlng students 7 - 19 years of age the opportunity to take te the water in safety. the WYC will be offering a saiing prograni cailed "Set Sali for Suznmer", te teach young people the art of saWlng. Organizer Ron Hupfieid METALS said that 25 par cent of their capacity bas registered already even though the first course doesn't start until June 30. Lessons wiil be, taugiit basicaly on board boats, starting with an Optimist eight foot for beginners, the CL14's for intermediates and a 15' Abacore for the more advanced. "It's a very complete course. They are teachlng the samne course ail over Canada," said Hupfîeld. During the course, studen- ta will learn boat handling, proper saillng knots, the rules of sailing, weather conditions and seamanship. The chief instructor for the courses is Hugh DesBerisay who bas the highest level for an instruc- tor in Canada. DesBerisay will be aided by Dave Holmes, Rob Hupfield and Doug Firikie, ail weli qualified individuals. Students taking the course must be able to swîm wel enough te have confidence in the water. Two rescue boats will be present at ahl times during the classes. This year the WYC wiil be able to offer better training to more students because of an increased staff and more boata. Classes will run from 9:30 - 3:.30, Monday through Friday including the July 1 holiday. AUl courses are approved by the Canadian Yacht Association. Levels that can be achieved are White Sail level 1, 2 and 3 and Bronze vanced. Hupfield suggests that those who want to achieve the Bronze levels should take more than one session since ail levels are very thorough. "We keep a high standard in teachlng because we want the student to pass properly," he said. The registration fee for a two week session is $80 per second member of the family gets a 10 per cent discount on the two weeks as doe any student who wishes to continue classes beyond two weeks into another sesion. Bursary fund eÉtablished Sister Mildred retires Mfter 13 years, Sister Mildred Moyle (centre), is retiring as principal of Denis O'Connor Higix School. At a reent reunlon of O'Connor alumni, Sister Mildred was honored for her service to the sehool and to Catholie education in Whitby. As a continuai reminder of Sister Mildred's work, the school bas set up a bursary fund for those deserving students who want to continue in the separate school system and cannot af- ford it. Sister Mildred, a member of the Grey Sisters of Immaculate Conception, is looklng for- 'ward to retirement, however, it rnay net be a restful one. She wiil attend the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. for a Urne before starting on a new career in the church's prison ministry.
