WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 19 FO, PAGE 3 Four years unti*l Brock bri dg e is re b ujt* The earlîest date for the replacement or the recon- struction of the old, worn-out overpass above the CNR tracks on Brock Street South is 1984. The narrow wooden bridge was recently equiped with a guardrail to separate pedistrian and vehicle traf- fic. A few years ago, it was the scene of a fatal accident. A recent public works report from Durhamn Region had the bridge fourth on its list of priorities for overpass construction. Their projec- ted construction dated is 1986. That reports lists level crossings at Brock Raod in it could take a lot longer than that. " Evans has repeated said in the past few months that the overpass is an effective barrier between Port Whit- by and the downtown as well as being a danger to the school children who daily cross it. "We have an old part of town that is almost physically separated fromn the rest of town and it is cer- tainly psychologically separated, " he said. "The people in Port Whit- by don't feel much unity with the rest of town. " The new marina and the Council regional sewer and projects scheduled for the area make an new overpass even more urgent Evans said. The same regional works department report that gave the 1986 construction date admitted that the Brock Street bridge is "deficient from the point of view of width and weight restric- tions," however, it also said that lit provides a safe crossing. " Emni and Evans are not the only politicians making an issue out of the overpass. Scott Fennell, the Progressive Conservative MP for Ontario Riding, made it an issue during the last federal election cam- paign. A couple of months ago, Whitby Town Council sent a letter to Fenneli asking for federal government help to reconstruct the bridge. Since then, Fenneli bas petitioned Federal Minister of Transport Jean- Lue Pepin asking that the government provide funds for t.he early reconstruction of the bridge. There has been to date, no response from the minister. Any reconstruction project would be jointly financed by- ail levels of government and Canadian National. VWHITBY TOWN PLAZA off for GERRY EMM Pickering, Park Road South in Oshawa and the one over Victoria Street ahead of the overpass. They are ahl due to be completed by 1984. However, Whitby Regional Councillor Gerry Emm says last week that town council will ask that the region to change the priority list, placing the Brock Street overpass ahead of the Victoria Street level crossing. Emm said that "the region doesn't have any real hangup about moving Brock Street up. IlWe feel it is necessary to give Port Whitby a facelift. " Residents of Port Whitby have only one main access to the main part of town - the Brock Street Bridge. A motion was brought forward at Monday night's council meeting to ask to the region to change the priorities list. It was given approval.- Port Whitby's represen- tative on council, Centre Ward Councillor, Barry Evans had asked in March that the overpass receive earlier attention having described it as "dangerous" as welJ as «"a crummy over- pass.it While giving his support to the motion before cowicil, Evans had indicated earlier that he was pessimistic about the starting date for reconstruction. '14 would say it is unlikely to go in 1984," Evans said hast week. "If they say 1984, sumnier Children are not the only ones with long sumrner holidays.
