Between You andMe i Dy RUTU- CHAMBERS About travelln Ontarlo Summer time stands by beckoning to us and saying, "take from me what you will, blue skies, warm sands, and everything the weather provides to warm your body and soul. "Wander far afield and savour the beauty of summer, hold it close to you and allow the warmth to envelop you. " Many summer visitors wil pass through Whtiby, some may linger and stay a while. Others of us will go on our way, say to Georgian Bay. On the shores of Owen Sound or as I cail it the Bay is Owen Sound, a town of 20,000 or so, a charming, pretty place, a hap- py place to be. A town of parks, really beautiful parks and a river which flows from one end to the other through the town. Two shores, the north and the south inhabitated by summer folk some of whom have made their cottages into winter homes. The bay, a good place to cruise or sail and like Lake Ontario often chilly and at other times warm and great for swimming. Beaches, warm sand and the Bay sometimes quiet and beautifui, other times stormy and wild. .The harbour, a winter port for many boats, mostiy grain carriers and tankers. Most of the boats come down from Sar- nia carryiuig oul and froni Thunder Bay, grain. Fishing is a major tourist attraction both in winter and summer. Skiing, downhill and cross coutnry skiing draw people from Toronto and surrounding areas. Owen Sound is in the snow belt region which means they have lots of dry, cripsy snow while we have a few flakes of rather damp snow. Agriculture plays a large part in this area. Beautiful farms, the bouses often made of limestone nestled in a valley or high on a hilltop. The town itself is at the foot of a hill by the water. Old buildings some of them being destructed to make way for new and often ugly modern places. I always wonder why tese mistakes are made only to be regretted at a later date. People and towns neyer seem to learn froni other's mistakes. An interesting place to visit and especially so for children is McKay Brothers Ltd. a department store on the main street. It is 75 years old it bas a money monorail. A unique cash system, one of a very few remaining in existence in North America. To make change ahl the money is sent to a central office by means of a money monorail. It is suspended on wires frorn the ceiling and runs from one end of the store to the other, on al three floors. The track is braced to the counter al of which are made of oak and maple. There are seven stops and the money box is set up to come back to it's own stop. You push a lever which determines what stop it will return to. It bas been said that things other than money used to be put in the money box such as dead mice or maybe dead flues or bees. At McKays bandaides and such things are sometimes sent back and forth. The money is ail kept in one place using this Lampton Cash System.
