WHITBY FREE PRESS WISC brings the Challenge Cup hom e Twenty-eight triuxnphant Whitby Iroquois Swimmers brought the Whitby-Lindsey ChàiIenge Trophy home aa on Sunday June 8, succesa ly defending the tile for the 1979/80 season. The competition between WISC and the Lindsey Llghtning Boits is an annual event for the two clubs, the trophy b eing donated by the Whitby Lions Club. WISC swimmers domiînated the competition and splashed to victory with a margin of 305 points to Lindsey's 150 points. WISC'S freestyle and medley relay teams made a clean sweep ini each age group winning every event entered. Accepting the trophy for WISC, coach Tom McLaughlin stated the WISC team always enjoys competing with Lindsey as the club hosts a well organmzed meet. McLaughlin pointed out that Lindsey outscored the Whit- by club in the ýprovincial championships in Aprl but WISC hopes to reverse that next season as well as retain t.he challenge Trophy once again. David Coulding was the top WISC swvimmer dominating the 13/14 boys' age group and capturing f ir- sts in every bindividual event. Chris Donnelly and Brian McAllnden in boys 10 and under and 11/12 turned in storng performances taking three firsts and a second place each, with Denise Vandoleweerd win- ning three first and a sixth in 11/12 girls' events. Coach Mcbaughlin is readying several of the WISC swimnmers who will be competing in the Central Region Long Course Cham- pionships in York on June 14- lsth. Hookers having .500 season tams have split so far this season in Eastern Ontario all star action. In the season operner against Oshawa, Whitby lost 12 to 6 after taking an early lead. The second game of the season played against Ajax saw Whitby outhitting Ajax with 6 hits including a home run by Jeff Hanley to five hits for Ajax. The final score, Whtiby 12, Ajax 7. On Saturday, May 31, Whitby traveled to Kingston and Kingston township to play a double header. In the first game, against Kingston Town- ship, the game was tieo1 at one a piece after regulation time. Winning for Whitby in the second extra inning was Jeff Hanley who led off with a single later advan- cing to second when Scott patio andl sidewalk slabs 111/-needIvsmn Harper singled again to drive in the winning run. The Kingston Township end of the inning saw a ground out and strike outs number 12 and 13 for pit- cher D. VanDoleweerd that enable Whitby to conclude the game with a 2 to 1 final score. From Kingston Township, Whitby traveled to Kingston where the out- corne was not as favorable. After the first inning, the Whity squad was down eight to nothing but managed to battie, back somewhat to end up with a 12 to 8 loss which isn't some bad considering the poor first inning. Tennis tourney, winners The Whitby Tennis Club held ifs Club Anniversary Tournament at the new Iroquois Park Tennis Courts on saturday, June l4th. The day was filled with plenty of fun, excitement and ex- cellent action. In the ladies's doubles division Gail Grossman and Bey Shanrock defeated Anne Lyseyho and Louise Shehan for the championship. Rita Hadden and Jocy Hadden defeated Bernice Reed and Nancy Reynolds to win the ladies consolation round. Lorne McIntyre and Ralpb McKendry played brilliantly to defeat Jack Benny and Dick Hadden to capture the men 's doubles champion- ship. Prem Syal and Frpnk- Todd took the men 's con- solation round by defeating Herman Morle, and his sone. Tournament play is one small aspect of the overail programs operating at the Whitby Tennis Club. The club has recently moved their location fromn Peel Park to three newly resur- faced tennis coursts at Iroquois Park. An excellent programn has been planned by the Whitby Tennis Club to meet the needs and interests of all levels of players.
