He also said that Durham "lIt has a lot of prospects," Hobbs says. "It is a deterant for the thief not to take the articles." He said that the final goal of the program is to reduce the number of break in thef- ts and that this is the "first national crime prevention program of this magin- tude." "lIt is a great in- vestigational tool for the police officer," Hobbs says because the program allows for stolen goods to be iden- tif ied properly. Hobbs says that about 270 businesses in. the region are presently in the Operation Provident program and echo of Makarucha's hopes that 3,000 more will be added this summer. He stressed, however, t.hat this is a back-up to the security systems that business presently employs. It is also to deter one of businesses biggest problems, internai theft. Under the aupises of the Federal Ministry of the Solicitor General, they will supply, free of charge, idenity numbers to businessmen under a programn called Operation Pzrevident. Each of these young people, hireci under the Summer Youth Em- ployment Program '80, will supply these businesses with a number that they can engrave or stamp on their equipment. Only their business will have this numnber and should anything ever be stolen, it can be traced back to them through the Canada- wide police computer net- work called CPIC. The business can even borrow one of the Durham Regional Police Force's fivE engravers for a 24 houi period without charge. The number that the business is given and recor- ded on equipment will be kept on record at the police departmnent. According to Cathy starting in Whitby," Manakrucha says. Sgt. Roy Hobbs, the Durham Police officiai responsible for supervising athe program, says that this force has a case pending before the courts where the accused was brought to trial because the merchandise had an Operation Provident number.
