PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, JULY 9,1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Town to receî*ve Ç$5.7 milion inlevies con t'd frorn pg. 8 can walk away from the project. "If these things are not approved by the 'IRegion of Durhamn or the Minister of Housing, then either of us can say 'forget it'," Gar- tshore said. Gartshore aiso said that the town stands to gain $5.7 milion, at least, in lot levies from the developers of which $4.4 million will be paid by C.B.C. The mayor said that the hydro facilities will also be paid for out of the lot levies in order to prevent an in- crease in rates. " 4We are taking it out of the lot levies so that it won't affect the rates," Gartshore said. He also pointed out that there will be no flurry of ac- tivity in the hamiet saying that it wili be two or three years before anything hap- pens. He also pointed out that according to the officiai plans that was adopted in 1974, Brooklin is supposed to grow to 25,000 population at some point in time. "This calîs for 10,000" Gartshore said. "There are ail kinds of safety.checks in here," he said pointing to a copy of the developmnent agreement which has yet to be signed by any of the parties involved. Gartshore also said that growth in the lower part of town will continue to be strong and wili be flot detrimentaily affected by Brooklin. -We're growing at ap- proximately 1,700 person a year," he said adding that when the project is fuliY un- derway the "total growth figure could be larger (for the whole town) but not in any significiant amount. " Brookli is also needed to keep the town's financiai situation stable by con- tributing to the tax base. "We have to have seven per cent (assessment growth) increase each year to stay economically viable." Gartshore believes that the Brooklin expansion will do this, and that the plan as it is now is economicaily good for the town. " We have as many protec- tions for the town as possible," Gartshore said. "'We have a reasonable, economically viable package."
