St a mystery The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a report of a downed aircraft about 1,000 yards off Thicksons Point. The suspecting crash was reported by Nancy Schmidt a 14 year old resident of the United States who was visiting people in the area with ber Port Hope gran- dparents at about 2:45 p.m. last Wednesday afternoon. According to Durham Regional Police spokesman, Inspector David Fleming, the young women was stan- ding on the beach when she spotted a light aircraft heading north across Lake Ontario through the mist. Fleming said that the girl believed that the aircraft was flying 10w to the water when she saw it splash down. Searches conducted by the City 0f Oshawa Marine Rescue Association (COMRA) and the search and rescue squad of the Canadian Armed Forces f rom CFB Trenton, however, showed no sign of debris or any other evidence of a crash. Fleming also said that there have been no reports of a missing aircraft on the North American continent during the last two days of the week. "There is nothing to in- dicated that a plane is missing in either canada or the United States," Fleming saîd. Fleming said that bis department turned the in- vestigation over to the On- tario Provincial Police who have jurisdiction over the lake. Last Thursday, Constable Rober Crozier, the OPP's investigator in the case said that while more search had been conducted by COMRA, there was stili no evidence of a crashed aircraft in the lake. "I can't confirm or deny that (an aircraft crashed) at this point," he said, adding that he is keeping an '«open mind" on the incident. Crozier also said that the lake is only 40 to 60 feet deep in the area where the air- craft is reported to have gone down and that any evidence should be fouiid easily.
