"The old road was no good in a competitive, growing town such as Whitby." In the late sixties the project got underway with the installation of storm sewers on a section of Brock street south in the Colborne- Gilbert streets area with an outfall to the Ash Creek. Early in the 1970's, the Highway 12/Dundas street east intersection was recon- structed, including Brock street, Dunlop to Mary streets and Dundas street, Byron to Perry streets. This portion of the project had a contract value of $425,000 of which the Ministry of Transportation and Communications paid $280,000. The Town of Whit- by paid $145,000 towards it's completion. Next in line, Brock street running from Highway 401 to Dunlop street, a length of 0.75 miles, and north from Mary street to Maple street, a distance of 0.25 miles were renovated. The combined price of the two sections was $2,325,000. The Brock street C.P.R. subway grade separation provided the largest single outlay of money and proved to be the most difficult part for the project, said Emm, chairman of the towns public works committee, The railway bridge itself is 51.5' in width, giving room for two existing tracks and leaving space for a third rail should such an addition ever be needed. Reinforced concrete abutments are supported on a pile foundation and the reinforced concrete piers are supported on spread footings. Along with the construc- tion of the subway grade separation a storm water pumping station was con- structed to achieve drainage of the subway to prevent flooding. The pumping station is located to the north-east of the structure, reaching 37' into the ground. It is equiped with two pumps each having the capacity to discharge 4,860 Imperial gallons of water per minute. "More than enough to keep the road from flooding," said Emm. Tonstruction of the bridge project was valued at around $3,500,000. Transport Canada paid $2,100,000, MTC $1,050;000, the town of Whit- by $215,000, the region of Durham $142,000, C.P.Rail $62,000, and other parties paid $45,000. With the major portion of the project out of the way, the final stage is now ready to get under way.
