WIIITBY FREE PRESS -Ashe-responds to Mondria 's letter EDITOR'I NOTE: The foliowing letter, wrtten by George Ashe, MPP (PC Durham West) is in response ta a letter written by A. "Bert" Mondria of 1504 Duf- ferîn Street in Port Whitby that appeared in Iast week's edition of the Whitby Free Press. M r. Mondria's suggestion that the GO Bus travel aîong Vic- toria Street as opposed ta the 401. He also brought up other Issues, incîuding water and sewer services in the Port Whitby area. This letter from Mr. Ashe ls an attempt ta answer Mr. Mondrias concerns. Dear Mr. Mondria: I would like ta acknowledge receipt of your August l4th latter cancerning my weekîy column on the Energy Savers Program, and the difficulties ex- perienced in the past number of years by the residents 0f Port Whit- by. We do seem ta have a communication probîem here. As you wiIl recali1, I did respond individuaîly ta each of the residents who signed the petition concerning the sewage/pollution pro- bîems in your neigh- bourhood, - and arranged for a meeting between yourselves, and the proper gaver- nment jurisdiction, the Raglan of Durham. The -Minister of Health responded ta .you parsonaîly on each of your concerns about heaîth issues, with a copy ta me. I did inter- vente In the Whitby GO Bus Issue, and arranged ta have fun- ding made avýailabie ta the Town of Whitby ta, provide adequate public transportation for the people of Whit- by. The last contact we had was when you had requested the Attorney general ta issue an in- junction against the Ministry 0f the En- vironment on the sewage/ppllution -issue On contacting the of- fice 0f the Attorney General, my office was advised that this was now a matter ln the hands of the courts, and therefore politicai interference must cease until judgement was forthcoming. In keeping with the spirit of Canadian Iaw, I respected the Jurisdic- tion of the courts, and did flot ln any way in- terfere wîth the due process of Iaw. With the exception of an express bus durIng rush hours, the GO Bus does in fact stop ln Whltby enroute ta Oshawa f rom 'the Pickering train station. Residents of Whitby may board this bus at pre-determined stops ta shop or visit in Oshawa, and return výa the same route. I do acknowledge of course that according ta GO transit icensing operations, the GO bus is prohiblted f rom picking up passengers at random locations. i regret that you feel you are being ignored, but I can assure you (and I think the facts speak for themselves), that this is not so, and has flot been the case ln the past. Yours sincerely, George Ashe, M.P.P.
