According to E. A. Schaefer, the director of public health nursing ser- vices for the unit, said in a written statement that in the 1g79-1980 school year ap- proximately 600 children were excluded from sehool because of head lice. Other members of the famiiy, including those that do not go to school, should be checked to make certain that they are infected, if they are, treatment shouid begin immediately. Each member of the family should have their own brush and comb. During the last school year, Schaefer said that the unit spent 163 working days dealing with this problem. "If one considers the cost factor in nursing timne and equipment, and the ioss of timne from school of the 600 children invoived (the average loss per student being minimally two days) this is a very expensive problem, " Schafer sa id.
