WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1980, PAGE 5 Between You1 and Me By RUTHC CHAMBERS "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." Aldous Huxely. During the past few years, I have become very interested in learning more about energy and have talked to many people who specialize in this field. Nuclear energy and such things are discussed at random by many who don't really understand much about it so I have listened to experts and tried to under- stand. I cannot remember many of the answers they gave me but I was impressed and felt I must learn more. Many of us are totally ignorant of such things and others of us garner knowledge from friends and the media. What we learn from the meida is generally a small part of the whole. Often they zero in on one area; this can leave us biased or prejudiced and certainly not fully informed even in one area. I have talked with, and listened to enviromentalists, some very ill informed, others will informed on some aspects of our enviorment. I have felt myself swaying back and forth, not fully convinced by any means but certainly influenced. It all comes down to two things, as far as I am concerned emotion and or logic. Emotion is a grabber; it can take over and allow your thinking to become quite irresponsible. Logic too is a grabber and it grabs me and comes to the fore. The result can be confusion. We hear a great deal about energy conservation. There are realities here which must be faced. There has to be an in- creasing demand for energy in the power field otherwise we will be thinking in terms of a deep depression let alone a recession. A concerned citizen with a great deal of experience for Whom I have great admiration and respect has talked to me in great depth about this topic. He believés that the majority of people do not understand how essential and vital it is to our civilization to have an elec- trical power system which is adequate. It must meet the highest demand under any circumstances. It is imperative that we have adequate generating capacity to meet the worst possible conditions emergency or otherwise. In spite of the most sophisicated protection and control systems which have been developed for the continuity of elec- trical supply there is always the possibility of a failure. No matter how remote, this could cause a collapse of the supply system over a very large area of the country. This could set up a chain reaction of interuptions. The restoration of supply un- Conservation of energy der such circumstances could be perhaps a matter of days rather than hours. It does not take much imagination to realize what could oc- cur if there was a complete failure. It boggles the mind. No gas pumps, no elevators, no traffic control and the loss of hun- dreds of other services. Stand by services could be used in hospitals, nursing homes and for the Bell and others for a time, but only a time. Food stored often in vast quanties could be totally lost. As we said, standby generating plants in various places could take over for a time, maybe rather a short time for essential services. To avoid this it is imperative that all electrical generating supply authorities have an adequate reserve of generagting plants available to meet any contingencency. Warble budget out of control Whitby has gone over it's warble fly control budget by $1,200. Councillor Joe Bugelli (West Ward) looked at the $7,180.87 bill for controlling the pests Monday night and asked the town clerk ad- ministrator Bill Wallace, "Do we have to do it?" Wallace replied that the town is locked into the program to rid cows tof the warble fly infestation. This process involves the spraying of cattle to kill the warble fly. The town is bond by law to pay for the project. A piece of legislation called the Warble Fly Con- trol Act states that the town must inspect and spray cat- tle at the town's expense. From the planning stage to completion takes about 14 years as we have said before. This means long range planning and thinking. The cost these days is enormous but once again time must not be wasted or the cost of failures and money could or will be prohibative. It has been said by some that the apparent surplus of generating capacity of to day is due to poor planning but one must remember that the planning for the stations which would have been nearing completion was done some 10 to 12 years ago. The reason for this was at that time the predicted rate of growth was higher. If we anticipate getting back to normal growth rate in 1994 we must start planning to day. What other forms of energy are there? virtually none1 Solar energy, not for me thank you at this time nor in this country. It's a dream, but to my mind, a fantasy. Oh, yes, for some and in certain locations an aid, a band aid but not too promising. We have all experienced warm sun on our homes in the depth of winter and a rest for the thermostat but imagine a week or so of gray skies. There is research going on with other forms of energy as well as solar heat which will not be of practical value before the end of the century. In future columns we will talk about neclear energy, the why's and the wherefores. Do people really have a clear un- derstanding of a need for this type of energy? I think not. Electricity is the lifeblood of our civilization believe it or not. Think about this. If we run short who will be the donors? To end on a light note we could ask, "men from outer space? 1 ALL TV SSERVICE CALL WITH THIS AD ONLY7 F.ALCON TV 426 Simcoe St. S. 723-0011 NOW OPEN SATURDAYS! juarantee oni ail parts and service
